for the most part, it's true. But if all you have is low quality links (and especially if your site is fresh as a newborn baby and has no backlinks yet) then yeah, it's risky...

I have. Many times. But that was 5-6+ years ago when I still had sites.

Nowadays I can't speak from up-to-date personal experience, but I still see newbies tanking their sites due to bad backlining practices, so I suppose this is still true

I just wanna add that not only the low quality links shouldn't be done a lot at once, I would prefer to do high quality links in a drip feed basis.

Quality of links is important here. If all are of good quality, then it will not harm your website.

Stop trying to dump spam articles and spam links. Google is getting smarter and smarter. Too many spam links will only lead to the website being directly banned. Nowadays, even if you succeed for a few months, once the core algorithm updates, everything will be wiped out. the same result every time.

It's very unlike what most people know and requires some investment,
It's not something that you should consider, nor allowed to be explained here,
If you're worrying about your website(s), just focus on building more authority over time and don't worry about it

you should always check how many low quality backlinks you have if is a really big ammount yeah better remove them, there is nothing wrong to have a lot of backlinks as long as they are good and healthy you can ignore a few low quality ones, but keeping control you don't have more low quality that good ones always more healthy backlinks

from personal observations, yes, this can have a negative impact. but there’s one condition: the backlink page content and anchor text must be irrelevant to the target page.

for example, if i have a local pizzeria site in NY, but my backlinks come from pages about tractors in Australia with anchors about buying tractors, googlebot is getting mixed signals.

there’s a suspicion that if too many strong backlinks like this exist, they might confuse googlebot and lower rankings for the intended keywords

I'm not a subject matter expert but the first time I got into backlinking, I knew nothing except that I wanted backlinks. Ended up with incredibly high spam, while ppl kept saying google would ignore spam links. Complete lie. The site I was managing got slammed. Had to diavow 90% of the links. Now, I always ensure the spam is low on any links I acquire.

No it’s a myth. It only destroys ranking if the links are spammy on your money site. If you use it on a parasite page though, you’re just going to rank high for it since they take a beating.

Mass backlinking still works but only if done right. Google rarely penalizes for too many links. instead it devalues spammy ones. If you build tons of low quality links too fast, rankings might drop due to poor trust signals, not a direct penalty.
