Re-branding expired domains

Has anyone had any success in 2024-2025 with completely re-branding expired domains and fully changing it from the original topic to something completely different?

Or does Google just devalue the links then?

Looking for real experiences, not just echo chamber telling something that someone else said. I mean, this used to work back in 2015-2016 even people were saying the same thing back then.

if you want to start a website about ''pillows and blankets'' and you buy an expired domain that created content about ''turkish history'' for years, it simply doesn't make sense and it will be hard to make search engines to update their original category for your domain

just buy a new domain or buy an expired domain in the same niche

I am using only expired domains but I have not tried to completely rebrand site many times. Only few times. I guess it really depends on what kind of backlinks and anchor texts the site has. Maybe I am wrong about this, I think in some cases it is doable...

keep in mind that those were just expired domains for 10$ a pop. From music band I did "health niche", ended up getting 4.5k active users monthly with AI content. From legal website dating site, that gets 3-4k views monthly still also with AI content. I have also done it with local magazine for completely different country to celeb magazine, even thought the previous content was not in English, but it had good eng profile backlink. But to be fair that was probably the worst example, since that site start picking up traffic almost after two years. I am not sure what kind of domain you are looking for, but unless it has mainly links to hp with bran name anchor from hq sites, I would not bother with this

Blackhat Niches still working on that. Like if you bought a 1k$ high authority clean expired domain and made it a casino site that would definitely work. Because my client's competitors are doing that. And they have secured top positions doing that.

But they do a lot of other things too to achieve that. The thing is if you are going to create an expired domain in a black/grey niche then go for authority domains only.

Google's current glue algorithm has changed a lot. It now works according to very complicated and confusing rules. To explain to you even a little bit how this algorithm works and what you need to do to make it work, you need to write from 10 to 20 pages of text.

Are you really waiting for some kind of answer to your question?

In brief:
Just change the topic? - No you can't, the domain will reset to zero, the ranking will disappear, and the assigned theme for the domain will be reset, you will get a blank new site with no theme.
Are there options? - Yes, there are options for a smooth theme shift, but complicated and long.

I wouldn't bother with a domain in a different niche completely, it'll be like trying to rank a whole new domain.

If you already have the domain then put some content on it that is relevant to that niche and monetise that. If you haven't bought the domain yet, move on and find a different domain in the niche you are working with.

Plenty of people lose interest in a topic, businesses go under and fads and fashions change. Some people simple pass away with nobody to continue on the website. There is an endless supply of different reasons for good domains to expire.

For example; if you sold cars in your town, you may have a website that naturally collects links with time. One day the company goes bust and the website expires. That domain would still have value, just not to the current owner. Somebody could grab that domain and turn it into a niche site about car sales, it may be completely passive income and would be worth doing for a webmaster, but a car salesman wouldn't know where to start and likely wouldn't be interested.

Different people will see things in a different light. People throw out old furniture that could be sold for hundreds all of the time. If you ever see a skip outside a house or business, just go look at how much "value" people throw away all of the time, it may shock you.

ill buy it. fuck it.. i m just afraid of being shadowbanned, like, i have a few domains that are indexed (even thousand of pages) from core updates but gets no traffic. do you know any way to prevent this?

Mainly brand anchors from government websites, huge news magazines, wikipedia - it's very good link profile, that's why I'm considering rebranding.

It expired since the location it was related became obsolete. Nothing to do with the "brand not being strong enough", it wasn't product or "brand" per se.

Why wouldn't other niches work then as well? And of course need to do a lot - I have quality network of money sites in that niche I would re-brand this domain too. On top of that I could spend $$$$ on new links from high quality authority sites. + I would launch real service on this domain, not just blog content. Just worried if I'm wasting the potential this way and Google essentially just devalue the links due to full topic change. And I would have done better just doing the basic re-creating the site in same niche or with archive org content.

I got the domain (with backorder dropcatch) already. Do you have recent actual experience using high quality expired domain in different niche? Even in this thread some people are saying it can work, and does work in black hat niches - why couldn't it work in other niches as well? The topic is somewhat specific and I don't think I could monetize that niche. What I could do is to re-create the site as it were or just on that topic and then try to somehow connect the topic to my main niche and write articles and link to my money sites. But since the domain is 4 letter brandable and has great link profile, would love to do more with it.

Any chance you could point me into right direction regarding the possible options? It's okay to PM as well, but happy discuss here publicly too.

I already know the method where you initially try to connect the target niche with the expired niche to keep it relevant and once done and new content ranks well, then 301 to another domain targeting fully the target niche. This at least used to work.

Nah, I haven't personally done it. I am more going off the experience of my customers have said more recently.

It isn't something I have had the need for and have been sticking to highly relevant domains for a good few years now. If others are doing it to great effect then I would listen to how they did that.

It's hard/impossible to find relevant, high quality domains in the niche I'm in - that's why I'm broadening my options/thinking.

from personal observations, google seems to pass seo value through backlinks only when the niches match. the only exception is for extremely strong backlinks.

there were experiments where a domain’s original niche was changed, and while there was a temporary positive effect, it quickly faded. this just confirms the observation—google recalculates the domain’s ranking over time.
