Is getting a good domain possible

With the all going automation, im wondering if it is even theoretically possible to get a decent domain when it expires.
By decent i mean something like 20+ Domain Rating on ahrefs with decent backlink profile, not spammed.

On the other note i reserarched a niche website and just by acquiring one domain with great seo joice- 40 domain rating, with multiple links from 90+ authority sites, the websites
went from sub 1k to 10+ monethy visits ranking #1 on multiple kws. The acquired domain got 301ed- just homepage, no fancy content rewriting and 301 pages.

Back to the main question. Do you think its possible to get a domain with decent seo juice for just a registration fee?

It's really hard. You can start monitoring expireddomains.net for expired domains but people already have automation in place to take the good domains

I am monitoring it but 99.9% are trash.

Im just impressed by this one site i mentioned, and its in high paying niche.

Have you checked generic TLDs for domains in your niche? Lots of really cheap ones, no reason to sweat over expired domains in 2025

i know a case where an expired domain, abandoned after being used for search spam, actually boosted google rankings. nobody wanted it because of spammy links and a bad history. could this have been predicted? i don’t think so. it had tons of completely unnatural links, and nobody was buying it.

it’s kinda like dumpster diving—most of the time, you’ll just get burned, but once in a while, you might find an old hdd with bitcoins from 2011

Also, from personal experience I can tell you that it is possible. Ok, maybe not over 20 DR specifically, but it IS possible to grab some good expired domains.

A few years ago I've spent 6 hours in one day toying with expireddomains.net and after about 6 hours of continuous searching and filtering and checking I was able to find 3 decent domains...

Also a few years ago I have purchased Scrapebox and its premium expired domain finder plugin (I think it cost $47 one time fee back then, I don't know the price nowadays), and after 30 minutes of letting it search I found 4 good expired domains. I remember that their DR had been from 5 to 15 (so, not over 20), but for me (never a pretentious dude) and for 30 minutes of automatic searching those have been good results as the domain have been cleaned of spam (have checked them in both Ahrefs and archive.org)... Unfortunately, I didn't register them because I was only testing Scrapbeox' plugin so I never had intention of registering them

But yeah, it is possible to find decent expired domains if you put in the work and use the right tools...

Hmmm…with all the automation and sniping, it’s tough but not impossible. Most solid expired domains get scooped up fast by bots or auctions, so grabbing one for just the reg fee is rare. But if you’re quick (and a bit lucky), you might still get it.

I see so many people claim that every domain has to be spotless or that there aren't any good domains out in the wild that it is just crazy to me.

I know of well over 100 domainers that predominantly get their domains from crawling and searching rather than auctions. There are pros and cons to each but I prefer the cost balance of expired domains over a domain that requires bidding on or drop catching costs.
