one of Romania's best movies, depicting the rule of our national hero, Vlad the Impaler.

I don't know how much of this movie is true (I can't prove either that it's true, or that it isn't), but I know that some of the wisdom bits of Vlad Tepes (Tepes = Impaler in Romanian) do resonate with our thinking and values, so if you wish to understand a little bit about our culture and history this movie - as much as it's being touted as being propaganda - does reflect a good part of both...

And the good news is that it comes with well-made English subtitles too.... Also the quality of the movie is amazing too, I don't know who had mastered this 1979 movie and how, but they've done a phenomenal job..

So anyway, if you're up for a good historical movie "Vlad the Impaler" is as good as (or better than) most Western historical movies, so enjoy the watching :)

Very good movie!
yep! But for us because we understand it and resonate with our historical facts, but I'm not sure that other people will see much value in it outside of the wisdom parts.

Oh well, given what garbage movies we have nowadays I think this will be a good alternative...

Oh, I enjoy historical movies... especially ones about World War, the Roman Empire, Alexander the Great.

I usually just rewatch a lot of old movies.

This could be a good one for the weekend :)

Ohh, another fellow romanian, salut.(hello). I think he was the precursor of communism + fascism ideologies but just my opinion. There are 2 stories I don't like about him, burning the poor people to 'cleanse the country' of poverty and he punished as well the minorities but nevertheless, he was a legend. He fought tooth and nail to get his throne back a few times and he ruled with an iron fist never see in history.

Oh nice, as a huge film nerd I'm definitely interested in this. I've enjoyed the few bits and pieces of Romanian cinema I've seen but I haven't seen nearly enough.
probably because we don't have a huge collection of historical movies. Over time I've saved like 7 or 8 movies that are related to Romanian history, and those are all that I could find so yeah.... not a lot to watch :)

Can you also recommend something historical that's among your favorites? I did watch Braveheart, Gladiator, and all of the big ones that I can't think of at the moment... 300 is one that - surprisingly - I've not watched yet (and it's time to remedy this soon :p ), but I don't know what else I have missed that's good.

I think I never liked Titan's Clash or whatever it's called, I tried watching that one several times within a month, and I just couldn't finish watching it, I don't know why...

Anyway, let me know what your favorites are as I'm on the lookout for good movies that I've missed...

hola :D

hey, it's your opinion, and it's as good as mine, so no problem :)

he didn't burn the poor people. When I first watched the movie I thought the same thing and I thought to myself "well this sucks" :D ... But if you watch that scene again, just before he burns them his soldiers pull out the only actually crippled dude that was in the house. Everyone else was either lazy or impersonator or fake beggar, and - being the righteous leader he's been - Vlad did have to do away with such people in order for the good ones to be safe and free of bums.

Just so we're clear, I am AGAINST burning (well, killing in general) the lazy people too (I am lazy too so I would have obviously been part of the murdered ones had I lived in those times), but back then our countries (Wallachia, Transilvania and Moldavia) were overwhelmed with evil at every single step of the way, and you know what they say "harsh times require harsh measures" :)

So anyway, watch that scene again and you'll see that the real crippled person gets pulled out of the house before everyone else is locked inside and burnt alive.

Is it true, that he used to impale the enemies in the butt, which came out through their mouths?

- The 13th Warrior
- Last Knight

- 300 (Please and please, watch :) )
- Eragon :smirk:

Sounds like a porn flick?

Is it true, that he used to impale the enemies in the butt, which came out through their mouths?

If Mask of Zorro is the one with Banderas and Zeta-Jones I've watched it (good movie)

The 13th Warrior and Pathfinder don't tell me anything, though... so, I guess these 2 are on my checklist :)

Eragaon never heard of either, so it makes 3 of them already. Thanks :)

Bro can you please translate, what is he saying from 3:37 ? :D

around 3:41 he says "niste tarani ce sinteti voi, ma!", which translates something like "you, peasants that you are!!", but here's the thing.

Normally, in Romanian the word "peasant" is not insulting at all and refers to people that live on the countryside, but when used in an emphatic tone like in this clip it's a SLIGHT insult. And I'm putting "slight" in all caps to justify that it's not the words that he's using that are the insult, but rather the tone, but even with this angry-emphatic tone, this insult is still slight. It's still an insult, but it's a mild one, it's not a harsh one.

I don't think there's an equivalent that exists in English language (if there is one, please let me know!), so the best you can translate it is exactly as I said in the beginning "you f*ing peasants that you are!", or "you commoners, just leave me alone", or "you, peasants, why did you have to find me"... something along these lines. Again, it's not a harsh insult when compared to other things like we usually say in Romanian when we're angry, but it's still a slight insult. That's honestly the best I can put it...

The dude (the Romanian one) is probably mumbling other stuff after that, but I can't make out what he's saying because it's neither very clear nor in an accent that I can understand. By the accent, he sounds Transilvanian (or from that central area anyway), whereas I am Wallachian (so, from the South of Romania), and - while we do understand each other very well - given how drunk or angry or whatever this dude is (and given that he's not from my local area) I can't figure out what else (if anything) he says. It could be simply mumbling in the chin, without meaning anything, honestly...

But yeah, the intelligible sentence is what I've said...

Yeah, but that's just a movie...

Yeah, but that's just a movie...
I mean, if we are going down this route the history books can be propaganda too. So, which is the truth exactly? :)

Damn sure, history was made by the one who written it, not the ones who did it, now with all the technology available is a bit harder to tarnish it, but with the development of AI, that would be possible too.
