I read the announcement by @PetraAnn about the new rule, but couldn't really understand what it means:
3.14 using forum functionality outside of its intended purpose in order to game the system, operate outside of the rules, or break the software.
I understand what each part of the sentence say, but I can't find an application to it outside the old rules (especially since it's under rule 3).
Am I missing something obvious?

The only thing I can think of is reaction score and bumping manipulation, which are covered under rule 3.3.

Obviously, I don't want to turn this thread into a pool of ideas for bad actors, but I still would have loved to get some more clarifications.

I know you asked to open a support ticket if we have any questions but this will benefit the whole forum if I ask it openly.

3.14 using forum functionality outside of its intended purpose in order to game the system

  • Does this apply to using bots to reply to WTB and HAF threads without even reading what is being asked/needed?
  • Does this apply to using bots to reply on the WTB and HAF threads, in terms of gaming the system so that the bots could post before anyone else to grab the client when they maybe can't even fill the requirements?
Thanks

Look at us, 3.14 buddies!

Lets just say that recently I've been dealing with some individuals who were caught using some forum functionality in a very creative way in order to game the system. While that incident has been dealt with, we wanted to make sure going forward that there was something within Section 3 about using functionality as it's meant to be. Especially since there's likely to be new features and functionality at some point in the future.

TL;dr don't get creative with the forum functionality, or ask if you can use it in a way nobody else is using it first, and you'll be fine.

I suppose the less explaining here the better then, our in-house arm wrestler is Petra

I watched a post go live in HAF yesterday, fair enough I'm nippy with the keys and am lacking personal and professional development outside of BHW, but the second I commented I had 7 users below me.

Had me thinking, are bots set to on first reply then comment or something...

Indeed.

Some of them comment just "yes" using bots and minutes later the account owner comes there to modify that Yes comment manually (until the forum allows modifications to existing comments) and they create a custom response to what was initially asked.

Ohhh right, I finally get it now lol. And as usual it's an hour after everybody else.

Does that mean we shouldn't have links in the occupation section of our about sections now?

(Used to have a twitter account link there.)

There's other rules that will come and get someone well before 3.14 is even thought of if you're not supposed to be putting a link there. The new rule would come into play if say, you figured out a way to put some sort of code into the about section so that when someone looked at it, they were instantly taken to the link. THAT would be an abuse of forum functionality.

Great idea! :D

I deleted the post and put it in jr exe just in case (might've caused more spam).

Makes sense to me though.

<3.

Alrighty, I think this has been sufficiently explained. Don't overthink this one, really. If you're ever not sure if you're using the forum in the right way after reading the terms or section rules, hit up support and they'll help you. Or they'll bug me for clarification.

I swear this isn't to "get" any of you. It's so I don't have to get super creative with warnings if we come across people exploiting forum functionality again.
