Do you have a strategy to research/evaluate the Topic you want to work on on Youtube ? doe snayone here have such a process and can benefit us by sharing some insights?

I just find competition and check their top performing and worst performing videos and put them inside a text files and then later do some brainstorming

I check top rated vids of the category I want from the competitors I want. That's how I do research. And I try to find competitors that are too big and have too many views so I can research what they do and what they don't. That's all.

I create animations, and just use memes or silly ideas and things that are popular. At the moment I am creating meme software piggy backing off a meme star, that records your audio over an animation, and then you upload to youtube. I found this "celebrity" in many news clips on Reddit, and already on YouTube, though, but their exposure came from TikTok tok, too. The reason I went for them, is that I rencelty done an animation on a music character, an that got me 3k + views now in a couple of weeks, at most, ant its like a days work with 10 seconds max time, still getting views, but this is what I want to be good at, getting viral meme animation ideas popular on youtube. You really need to be partially good at drawing, and its such a wide opportunity, as so many people still have a tiny school voice saying they can't draw. But look at good reasonable quality and regular uploaded animations do on channels, and you'll be more than motivated to draw for the money! lol

I guess this would be the approach once a person has reached a certain number of subscribers. The responsibilty to deliver more quality content will be there once someone reaches that stage.

Yes, I typically start by researching trending topics within my niche using tools like Google Trends, YouTube's search bar, and social media platforms. I also check out popular videos from similar channels to see what’s performing well. Then, I refine the topic by looking at search volume and competition, using tools like TubeBuddy or VidIQ. Finally, I make sure the topic aligns with my audience’s interests and my own expertise to create engaging content.

I think the "trendy topics" is a whole niche itself If I'm not wrong ? I've seen faceless channels explore that: they look for the last trendy news, they come up with content that focus on unexploited angles and catchy clickbaits & thumbnails.

I've seen one channel that accumulated millions of views in few months, they're making videos about every new trendy topic: The Pdiddy affair, US Elections, The Korean president and LA fire now. I can't seem to find it to share it here for analytical purpose. The making of content seem OK for me but ranking it is another story.

I would create a sheet at the very beginning, filling it with at least 100 channels with their join dates, publish frequency, subs count, average views per video, and many other metrics. Then, find the answers:

1. How many NewTubers in this niche (e.g. joined in 6 months)? How do their views compare to the OldGuns? If there are hardly any NewTubers in the niche, it's a bad sign.
2. How much difference in average views per video exists among channels with different subs tiers? As a NewTuber with few subs, can you still get featured or recommend by YouTube? What market share do the TOP3 players have? Entering oligopolistic markets is not a good idea.
3. Is it declining? For example, if you're starting a gaming channel, but interest in that game has significantly waned, you might not be happy.
4. Where does impression mainly come from? Is this niche driven by long-tail keywords search or top-tier recommendations? For instance, if you're teaching a foreign language, you might need to cover a wide range of topics, as people find your videos through searches. But if you're doing hot dance, chances are it's mostly through recommendations.
5. Identify channels you consider as references. Watch the popular videos and ask yourself: Why do people love watching these (instead of others)? Summarize the user insights. Then, ask yourself: What unique add-on value can I provide?

This research is exhausting but absolutely worth spending a week on, rather than months making videos only to find no one's watching.

I wanna add some points to your number 3 in case someone reading this wants to go into gaming.
I talk mainly from the perspective of a youtube watcher here

I sometimes watch gaming videos of games I played years ago, or never played. Also depending on the type of content some may be evergreen.

Let's take Rimworld for example. I may not watch a 10 x 2 hour episode Let's Play Series that was done 3 years ago because the game has significantly updated since then.

BUT I may be tempted to watch that series from 3 years ago if it's modded in a certain way, so it has an unique spin and isn't just vanilla gameplay.

Or if it's a series by a creator I like specifically for example there is a gamer called Rycon and he does it in a storytelling/roleplaying type of way. So even his playthroughs of games 10 years ago (games nobody playes anymore) is cool to watch. I sometimes turn them on and have it play while I fall asleep.

Also on the reasons I enjoy his videos is because it's laid back and he doesn't yell or scream neurotically like a lot of gamers. He got a pleasant voice too

A few years ago I was following one of his playthroughs and when it had ended he started playing a game I didnt care about, guess what I did. I watched one of his older playthroughs of a dead game

Now evergreen is a whole different beast. I have seen tutorial videos for the dumbest things for the most niche games gather a million views in 10 years.

So while it doesn't seem like much, but if you make a many of these type of videos. It will keep generating money for you.

Let's say you made 100 videos like this, And it took you around 50 hours of effort.

Let's say in 10 years you got 10 million views from these 100 videos and all the videos are less than 8 minutes long.
So your gaming RPM will be between 0.50 cents and 2 bucks worst case scenario

That's earning you somewhere between 5k and 20k for 50 hours of work.

One of the metrics I would use to decide if I were to play a game is to check how many people play in a day on Steam. If it's above 20k, it's a good game to invest time and effort in.

Just make on trending topics. If you have good subscriber base, you can get lot of views with this strategy.

Well i think you need to have a combination between a good niche that sells and you have a pasion for it youtube
Because you can have a great niche but if you dont like it or have an interest in it eventualy you will give up to create content
Also you can have a lot of pasion in a niche but if its not fitted to sell products you will not make money
