99 times out of 100, the person is contemplating it and might commit it. I never called that number, but I had an attempt back when I was 19. The hotline has helped many people, and maybe just being there shows people that they are not alone.

You never truly know what is going on with someone.

Taking your own life is very hard to do (it requires courage and / or insanity) and of 100% attempts maybe only 5-10% (random number, but the point stands) succeed. The suicide hotlines are for the other 90-95% that don't succeed.... at least that's how I see it, but feel free to prove me wrong

It's really not, because often times someone does not want to end their life, they are just after true human connection and being listened to, which the operators of the line are specialized on. People just get so desperate sometimes that ending their lives seems easier rather than opening up to someone, especially men.

and calling it is one of his last possible attempts before an extreme act

It's not a binary situation I'd imagine. You can want to die but still want to live as well. The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Don't underestimate this service, or the people who call it or don't call it.

I have experienced situations where callers have been picked up by the police within minutes and taken to a psychiatric hospital.

I have also experienced silent people who did not call.

And people who took their own lives in hospital.

If someone really wants to go, they go.

Very few people with depression actually WANT to die. They just can't handle the pain any more and want it to stop.
Of course they know that their suicide would heavily affect the lives of their loved ones, so there is a constant back and forth in the head of someone with depression.

Logcally, rationally, you're right - but that's not how depression works. Sometimes people just have an absolutely horrible day and just need a tiny bit of hope to keep going.

I was the same age when I tried too and glad I failed at it or I wouldn't be typing this. I took a good amount of pain meds and was rushed to the hospital to drink this horrible charcoal mixture(saved my life). Turned my life around shortly after and started hustling online to make money which helped me feel better about myself. Finally got to a point in life where I'm at now where I can just chill, I still have to hustle some to make ends meet.

because when you are determined to do something, you are not going to call someone who is the complete antithesis to what you are trying to do to get them to change your mind.
imagine you have hired a stripper and she has agreed to fuck you for $300. you are not going to call your wife to see if she will change your mind.

Suicide prevention hotlines have saved the life of a relative of mine twice. I would suggest you speak to those who have actually used them.
