Another option which i almost considered when i crashed was to buy another exact drive as the 1 that crashed and replace the platters in the new one with the old platters.

Never tried it but at the time called people who do drive recovery and after they told me their price i threw my theory on platter switching at them and they agreed but tried to talk me out of it and let them do it.
So therefore it must work so if you take your time i think you can recover your data.
If it don't work put the innerds back in the new drive you bought and return it for one that works

you need a cleanroom environment to do it, they were right in talking you out of it, i have a data recovery center locally that i use for clients who ABSOLUTELY need their data, normal pricing is 200 to 800$ along with a matching hdd ideally or a hdd big enough to put the data they get off of it onto, they are REALLY damm good at what they do, but, these hdd's were encrypted with truecrypt so they would have a hell of a time getting the data back to me

happens and when it does all your data can fall into anyones hands when they buy a server at an auction.

I know it is not expected to happen but it does so just remember your data could end up anywhere.

yes but i think you could get the drive switched and work to recover your data without a clean room.
Wear a face mash no breezy movements and do it in a small area like a bathroom which you can clean ahead of time and spray down with an alcohol spray.
Ofcourse this is to save money not time or effort if you have the spendable cash and the data is that important then yes by all means go to a company that recovers drives and let them handle it.

Oh and remember if you have illegal stuff on the drive you may get reported in the U.S

this is why i refuse to install a hdd over 500 gb. clerks keep trying to sell me on big drives, but a tb of data is waaaay too much to risk losing due to a crash.

buy servers at auctions and get people personal information...I suppose you could do it since theres no way to really delete a hard drive they say./

I like to think the information you had that was important will be hidden by the TB's of porn these people keep....

I usually make a 8.5 GB DVD backup in every month or two. Specially the reports and emails i get. Software,songs and movies can be downloaded again so don't make backup for those!!

I never had any HD died, I have one really old 5-6 Years old it's only about 40-80gb lol but still I keep important stuff over there I should backup it I guess ;o

I had a 2tb and 1tb in one of my desktops die, this is just a call out to remind people to backup important data, i think i have most of what i wanted off of them but im sure iv lost a bunch of data too (before anyone mentions backups, backing up 3tb of data is no small task!)

so there ya have it, setup a decent backup on your important data

Kidding, I lost 1TB worth a few months ago and it still pisses the living hell off of me. I have also seen that the larger the HDD the more likely they are to fail so the only reasonable way to buy these drives is to buy them in pairs, one operating drive, one for backup.

I feel for you. I just lost 1.5 T on two drives in a 'blue-screen-of-death" crash, so I know how you feel. Movies and music, meh, I can replace. However, these drives hold all of my IM stuff so I'm sunk till i can figure out how to get the bios to recognize them and write or repair the master boot sector to hopefully begin recovering data.

Looks like I learned my lesson. The next best thing to online storage for me is a freestanding raid assembly. It won't help if a crash damages the mbr but at least everything won't be gone & I can go back to the last saved copy.

I'm looking for ideas on how to back up so this won't happen again.

I can use some ideas on how to recover this data without giving my illegally pirated IM stuff over to a third party. Heard that the recovery companies are turning people in for finder's fees...

Never happen this to me, anyway I make a weekly back-up on a external HDD of 1TB(USB connected).I don't like online backups, takes too long to upload but can works for others with partial backup.

I feel your pain on the data loss.... I am willing to guess that you had the large drives as the "working drives and not being used as just storage drives. My 2 cents to you is to use smaller drives (120 Gb or less) as your working drive (meaning the hard drive that spins up when you turn your computer on) and the larger drives as just storage. Using smaller drives will force you to transfer the larger files onto your storage drives once your downloads are complete. Your storage drives will last much longer when they are only used to access the data when you need it. When the working drive breaks (which is often the case when comparing working drives & storage drives) you tend to only lose the operating system & any programs you had installed on it & that should not be that difficult to replace but important data loss on a storage drive can make a grown man cry...

If I was doing raid though I'd probably get a drobo since they are easy to setup/use and they have time machine already setup (you can set it up with linux however, but its a pain in the ass)

If you are serious like troph, then definitely get a proper box made up to backup your shit.
