I just lost 3tb of data

I had a 2tb and 1tb in one of my desktops die, this is just a call out to remind people to backup important data, i think i have most of what i wanted off of them but im sure iv lost a bunch of data too (before anyone mentions backups, backing up 3tb of data is no small task!)

so there ya have it, setup a decent backup on your important data

Dude trust me that happened to me once, I spent days downloading a program then I somehow deleted it without backing it up..... I used a program and it got it back ....

there are a few programs that show you the file then ask you to buy it before it restores the files....but some programs are free

that sucks big time, but you can try to get back at least some of the data with Getdataback for NTFS, if the HDD is not seriously physically damaged
it helped me out a couple of times and i'd say it does really good job, 80-90% of the lost data is recoverable even if you formatted your HDD

nah, the hdd's themselves are totally dead, though im sure a link will probably be beneficial to this thread either way 1 hdd the bios refuses to see, the other starts ticking after a couple mins and then stops working entirely... shrug data is gone, im already over it, sucks but meh lol

lol that it is, sadly iv had my mega raid box offline for a while due to a mobo problem with it and im only just about to bring it back online over the next 48hrs, 12 hdd's in hardware raid6 with a hot spare... drool that box is great with databases

theres not enough physical space in the case currently to put a 2nd disk in to do it properly nor is there space to put in a real raid card instead of onboard fake raid crap, few months and ill be changing a few things around and will be goin hardware raid10 with 4 disks in it most likely but for now ill just set it up to backup properly onto my 'real' raid box (areca arc1230, 12x500gig 7200rpm hdd's, max'd cache (1 or 2gig? forget) and bbu on the raid card)... i love my raid box

Sorry to hear about that. It happened to me earlier this year so I know it sucks!

As a last resort, try using Ontrack's EasyRecovery Professional... This is the only software that found and recovered almost everything I lost.

i have this fetish also from the more serious type, i used to have porn fetish (i had teras of porn lol), now i'm getting older and formatting my HDDs to download HD movies
i don't have that much as you (had) tho, i have only ~2 teras

as you don't have too much to lose now, i'd say try to disassemble the HDDs and assemble them and see what happens, it also worked for me one time (i didn't to anything more just disassemble than assemble)

but how come the 2 HDDs went wrong at the same time?

no affil links there, 3ware and areca are 2 very good brands for raid cards, they are what datacenters normally use and iv had a lot of experience with them both and love them both

shrug who knows, nothing else in the box is playing up and i run off of a double online ups and have an enermax 1250watt revolution85 psu in the box so it certainly wasnt power and it wasnt heat because iv got fans setup right near the hdd's so... shrug im hoping that the replacement drive i got will last a bit longer, they were both under 12months old... the new drive is designed for high vibration environments like datacenters though so im hoping that helps its lifetime, if anything the subwoofer did damage to them over time cos i tend to burn through hdd's every 12months pretty easily

actually its pretty safe for the most part, ontop of that you can always grab some software that archives up ur backup, encrypts it and uploads it while you sleep for your most important data if its encrypted properly noone will get it, gpg and the like are extremely safe

Another option which i almost considered when i crashed was to buy another exact drive as the 1 that crashed and replace the platters in the new one with the old platters.

Never tried it but at the time called people who do drive recovery and after they told me their price i threw my theory on platter switching at them and they agreed but tried to talk me out of it and let them do it.
So therefore it must work so if you take your time i think you can recover your data.
If it don't work put the innerds back in the new drive you bought and return it for one that works
