Some clients can be very frustating to deal with endless demands. Some do not want to pta anything and get everything done for almost free. Some are noobs with unrealistic expectations. So, if I am starting as a seo provider, should I accept every enquiry as client? Or there should be some filters?

I suppose it depends how badly you require business - if you already have a few clients who pay you well and you come across someone problematic why take them on in the first place?

There are such clients in every field of activity, not only in SEO. You need to have a clear price list for each service and agree on all the work in advance.

If I see that a client is problematic, I don't start working with them because it will end up being a lot of headaches.

Nobody is forcing you to accept every client, if someone does not feel like a good customer, don't proceed with the sale

I am starting out. So I should accept whatever work that comes?

If you don't have any clients it might be a good idea to do it temporally to earn some money and build up your portfolio.

When starting as an SEO provider, it's important to prioritize clients who are open to collaboration, have realistic expectations, and recognize the value of quality work. This approach helps you build strong, lasting relationships that drive better results.
For instance, I once worked with a client who was new to SEO, and despite offering free strategies early on, that client is still with me after six years.

When you're just starting out, it's better to keep every client. Once you have a client base and are established, you can choose who to work with and who not to work with.

In sales, situations like this are common:
  • Knowledgeable Clients:
Some clients have a good understanding of SEO. They know what they want to buy and what to avoid. These clients may make a purchase if they like what we offer, but they are often selective and critical.
  • Uninformed Clients:
Some clients come with little or no knowledge about SEO. They tend to listen to our recommendations and usually stay with us for 2 to 3 months, trusting our guidance during that time.
  • Demanding Clients:
These clients are the most challenging. They only care about rankings and traffic but often come with a limited budget. They expect results within 30-40 days and sometimes even insist on paying only after seeing first-page rankings. This is where frustration often begins.
Every sales professional encounters these situations, and it’s part of navigating the diverse expectations and knowledge levels of clients.

It’s tempting to take every client when starting out, but filtering is essential. Set clear expectations, discuss budgets upfront, and ensure alignment to avoid frustration. At Red Star Technologies, we’ve found that a solid onboarding process helps create win-win partnerships. Saying "no" to the wrong client can be a smart move!

You should nit mention your company here.

Some may have unrealistic expectations and difficult to work with

It's better to assess the client's needs, budget, and understanding of SEO first before accepting them Imo

Ignorance is not a bad thing, selfishly speaking. Many people don't know anything, not even the most basic differences. I have a friend who has a business and pay agency for made a website, this days he was telling me happily that he spent 400 euros and now the site is ranked! Talking to him, then, it turned out that it is indexed and not ranked. He don't know the difference LOL. I would have indexed it for free with GSC if he had asked me.

If I were you, I would accept anything as long as I can meet the customer's needs.

If you are starting, you pick everyone and filter out troublemakers slowly. They drain you with bad attitude and not appreciating. With time you will get a hang of it and work with stress free customers.
