Which format would be better in terms of an affiliate niche?

A site with a few pages, maybe 6 or 7 tops. A simple SE Optimized layout with the needed keyword rich content on the different pages. Links focused on the home page.

or

A blog with the keyword rich post somehow stuck to the top of the home page of the blog with daily or at least frequently updated posts that aren't really at all related to the main keyword, with excerpts (not full posts) being displayed on the home page?



Most people will say the blog I'd assume. I've heard content is king. Right. Well what about when the blog gets to the point where it has maybe 500 posts? Obviously, links are really only being built to the home page and the keyword rich post.

I'm wondering what to do. It seems like the competition above me in my niche all has the small site with minimal content; however, many of these results have fewer backlinks, 2 years or more less domain age than I (meaning mine is usually at least 2 years older), some have a smaller page rank, others have equal, and to top it off, all our domains have the keywords in them; however, mine is the .com keyword.

What do you think? Blog or landing page? Which is the better option?

You will do better with the blog. Beat him on site structure, internal links, and links to pages.

Landing page is just that.. a landing page. It's where you drive traffic to convert, not to generate traffic.

Would you suggest that the problem with my websites strategy is that I need to be building links to the inner pages that are for the most part irrelevant to the niche and keywords I'm going after?

Would it not be easier if I just had a few pages? I mean, isn't the link juice/effectiveness of a link leaking to the inner pages of my sites which I have no interest in ranking for?

Most definitely you can add to your existing site and keep building links to your pages you want to rank. I don't know enough about your site or your competition to really know the specifics of what you need though.

No, there is no leaking that goes on. Your internal links play a roll in creating more anchor text to tell google what keywords you should be ranking on. The more internal pages you have doing this the better. 5 pages with 5-10 internal links that point to one page, or 500 pages with 500 to 1000 internal links that point to one page.. which will have more weight? The 500 one.

Thank you for the help. I think I might modify my strategy a little bit to see if the changes can help move my site up. It's not like it's been a short term fight for ranking on this keyword so after a month or so I'll have to see where it puts me.

I'm still open to more advice if anybody else has an opinion for me. I'm appreciative for anything that somebody wishes to share.

You mean cloaking affiliate links? If yes then very simple option there is a plugin for wordpress by name of gocodes... use that and you will be able to put link inside article or banner like www.mydomain.com/..../product

... space will be anything you wish, could be "go" or "recommended".... It will not only cloak links but also track clicks on that links...

For OP blogs are easier to run and maintain... Also you will be making link for your landing page your homepage page is not gonna rank...

The thing is, it is my homepage that currently ranks. So now I essentially have to start all over and build links on the actual post it seems. That's fine, I'd been considering this strategy for some time.

An easy way around this would be to switch to a theme that lets you have both. There are themes that are landing pages in themselves (like SqueezeTh3me and Flexxth3me) and there are also themes that are highly customizable and therefore can be whatever you need them to be (Headway is an example, and it's in the downloads section).

You can hack the hell out of your header's blog theme and turn it into a landing page, that way you get the best of both worlds.

I would prefer blogs and you can easily convert your landing pages into blogs.

You can make landing page as your homepage and still keep adding content through posts... Nothing will change just make landing page sticky so it will always come on home page... Page or post you can do both just little tweaking needed...
