I'm starting a travel website(s) project, which will cover each country in great detail, eg. will have separate silos and categories for /travel/, /history/, /culture/, /food/, etc.

I need people experienced in SEO to point me in the right direction:
  • do I get 10 domains, separate for each country
  • do I get 1 domain and produce content under additional level 1 silo for each of the 10 countries
The second option seems way easier to scale because of building authority for just 1 domain instead of 10, but I've read conflicting theories regarding whether having one domain dedicated exclusively to one subject (in this case a country) brings any additional "expertise" benefits vs. simply adding this country as one of many in a silo under one domain.

Let's assume I have 500 articles about Mexico on the website mymexicosite.com vs having the same number of articles about Mexico but on a site mytravelsite.com/mexico/ where there are also 500 articles about Egypt, and 500 articles about let's say Thailand.

In the example above, does Google give any edge to the Mexico-only site, or it doesn't matter, as long as I create the right silo structure and do the internal linking the right way?

I really appreciate all your suggestions.

Happy New Year! :)

One domain per destination

Using a single domain for all destinations will place you in direct competition with major players in the travel industry.
These companies use pSEO to scale their things

As a newcomer, you’ll face a tougher challenge trying to rank for high-competition destination keywords.

My advice: focus on niche travel websites. Start with less popular travel destinations, establish authority in each niche, and scale gradually from there.

Hope this helps.

Good advice from @Fang Yu. I am not a subject matter expert and while there are both pros and cons to both options, I feel like option 2 (Single Domain with Silos) is better. You can can build one strong brand and funnel all SEO efforts into growing its authority. You can also use strong silo structures and interlinking to signal expertise within each country topic. Essentially each country will have a "mini-site" and while Fang Yu's point is valid, the key to competing effectively lies in differentiation and strategic focus. Again I'm not an SME but I am just thinking about scaling, cost and the level of effort. I just feel like it's easier to maintain travelsite.com/mexico/travel or travelsite.com/mexico/food vs distinct domains.

I’d suggest going with a single domain structured with silos... it’s easier to manage!

What matters most is how well you organize and interlink your content to show depth and relevance for each country.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Keep them coming guys, please. I really want and need to make the decision in the coming days.

All opinions are important! Let's keep the discussion going :)

Look dedicated sites for specific countries work better generally. That's because they're more focused on a topic and google views this as better. However, a general website about travelling could cover all those topics. What is more you will NEED backlinks. It would be easier for you to get backlinks for 1 site than 10. If you know you can put 10 times the work to acquire backlinks for 10 sites then go ahead and please do 10. This is tedious and too demanding. Last but not least 10 sites with different domain names and a bigger hosting package would cost more in order to be created. So it's up to you and what you want to achieve.

In terms of SEO its better to have one domain per destination as mentioned above. But on the other hand, you mentioned 10 domains which will be very difficult to manage if you are alone without a huge budget. Its 10x more work if you have 10 domains compared to 1 domain.
Local domains will get some local SEO boost but not that much. Of course its better to have the site for Mexico with .mx domain but it all comes back to the question if you can manage them all, build backlinks, create content etc etc.
Creating content is easier than ever, and you can shoot out fine articles within seconds with AI. With backlinks, there are no shortcuts and its been getting tougher each year. Starting off with 1 domain and scaling from there is something I would do.
Hope it helps!

I look at this in 2 ways:

1) if you want to go with what's working now (which is good short term but might not work long term) @Fang Yu was 100% correct in the sense that one big website that addresses many countries puts you in direct competition with the big dogs that you almost guaranteed can't beat.

2) the other point that I'd like to make is that you're trying to do the right thing as google tells you to, but there will come a time when google will have no say in how people should treat their websites. Imagine a world without google (and without search engines in general)!

In such a world your main focus is to have a great website that helps people with their travel needs, and for such a scenario 1 domain that talks about all countries is the way to go since you don't have to waste money like a lunatic just to please a retarded AI.

Personally, given how atypical I like to think that I am, I would go with option 2 (even if only to spite google, if that's even possible). But more than spite, I would do it because this would be MY website, MY business, and I do whatever the hell I want with it and a random garbage american corporation should have no say in what I do with my sites. Someone should really teach these american corporations a lesson and put them in their place (beneath everyone else).

Yes, I might never rank in google, and yes, I might never make money with google, but I still wouldn't care. I have had 4-5 sites that I have renewed and kept live for over 6 years back in the day even though they weren't ranking in google, but I kept renewing them and keeping them live just because I wanted to stare at them and marvel in how pretty they were (I'm not joking). I am this kind of crazy when I set my mind to something... In the end, in January 2022 (so, exactly 3 years ago) I've sold them and got done with SEO, I ain't ruining my life and mental sanity to please an obscenely rich corporation (google) to make even more money. You should do the same too, without us - the people - none of these corporations would still be alive and their CEOs and share holders would struggle heavily to find their place in society since they're not good at anything except for accruing wealth into their own hands. In any normal society the communities and honest people should thrive, while the parasites be humbled and struggle to fit in. Unfortunately, we don't live in such a society, but - fortunately - we can create one if we all stop doing what we're told by the ultra rich and powerful and do with our lives what we want (humans are free beings, they should have to answer to NO ONE, for ANY reason if they comply with the only 1 rule that matters: whatever they do, whatever they think, they should never ever EVER as much as insult or harm a single fly, much less an animal, plant, or - worst of a ll - a human being, no matter how they look like or whether they're from Earth or from elsewhere)

But anyway, I'm starting to digress and getting into the realm of insanity, so let me get back to the topic on hand :)

As I said, what Fang Yu said is 100% correct and it's what will work for you. But who's to say that in a few weeks or months google won't shuffle the algo and SERPs again (like they've been doing constantly for the last 2-3 years) and your niche sites will stop working? This is a valid concern if you're in this for the long term, and if you must adapt to the changes that google makes few times a year i'm sure you agree that it's easier to work on 1 domain instead of 10 (or however many you'll end up having). Not to mention the renewal costs and the costs for SEO-ing all of your sites (content creation, site monitoring, link building and site promotion in general, etc)

That's why I would personally opt for 1 domain that encompasses all of the countries you wish to talk about. Sure, you will get into competition with the big dogs, but this only happens in google where these big companies have mastered the art of dominating the SERPs. But if you focus on other sources of traffic where people don't know yet how to dominate you have a better chance of positioning yourself as the authority and - once again - if you find such an opportunity I'm sure it will be easier to position yourself as an authority with an already authoritative domain instead of having to do it with 10 different domains.

And since there are risks to never rank in google regardless of what you do, why not ignore google completely and plan & design your site the way YOU want it to look like, not the way google wants you to design it so they can steal your content anyway and train their imbecile AI based on your hard work?

So, go with 1 domain, plan and design your site the way you want, ignore google completely and focus on other methods of getting traffic (social media, podcasts, forums, PPC, online directories, radio advertising, ezines, partnerships with local travel agencies, etc) and you will see that - in the end - when you're big and hard to ignore anymore, google will come to you like a cheap whore (figuratively speaking, of course) and rank you in their dying search engine regardless of what SEO you did or didn't do on your site, and regardless of how many SEO rules you've broken. When it comes to smelling money and opportunities nobody does it better than big "successful" companies that are nursed to the dollar and can sniff profits from the other side of the galaxy, so start thinking and acting like you're already a big dog in your industry and the results will follow regardless of what google thinks of you for now...

Any further feedback, experts?

The best option for you really depends on your resources. In my opinion, going with 10 separate domains is the best strategy for several reasons, but it’s also the most challenging. If this is your first project in this niche, I’d recommend starting with a single site dedicated to one country as a test.

After 6–12 months, if everything goes well, you can expand and create the other 9 sites.

I got a good laugh; you're right on every point; that's also what we did/are doing with seo. We build for us first and enjoy it after we wonder how to share it with others. One of my most successful sites was entirely created for me and my need for certain information I couldn't find at all online. And funny enough, after months of contemplating it, it starts to get traffic, and it's not slowing down. Every piece of content and media is created by me on that website. A fun project that turns right.

This is just to highlight what you said: the OP can go and do it as he likes; it also works. Everything depends on his dream and ambition.

OP, both options are the same -- you need to start somewhere; as your project takes shape, you will have a better view of the direction to take.

It's generally more effective to use one domain with separate silos for each country.
This allows you to build a strong overall domain authority, making it easier to scale and manage.
Proper organization and internal linking can help Google recognize each country's content.
Multiple domains, on the other hand, require individual SEO efforts and are harder to manage, as each domain needs to build its own authority from scratch.

A single domain would be better, and more effective with less investments (more ROI), as long as you're sticking to the same niche (not too broad),
The main advantages SEO-wise, are topical authority & off-page domain authority,

Building the overall link profile for the website to rank will cost less, you'll need fewer links to get the same page(s) authority to rank,
You'll be taking advantage of the internal linking & overall authority, which will flow to all of the website pages, unlike the case for 10 separate domains,
That's why authoritative websites' new pages would rank without any need for links for every new page made, they inherit enough authority to rank,

For the topical authority part, you'll be gaining more topical authority for the slightly broader niche,
For example: Travel > Food > [Country] vs Travel > Food, a single website would have more topical authority about Travel, Foreign food & Food in this case,
It's pretty much like person #1 visiting a single country and trying 10 local foods, & person #2 visiting 10 different countries & trying 10 on each,
You'll get opinions equally when asking for that specific country's food, but when it comes to travel & foreign local food, person #2 have advantage,

The only downside would be the hit & miss of ranking on Google,
If you're not confident enough that you won't be able to rank & keep ranking, a single website could go all down if you're messing anything up,
Ofc, that's up to the algo most of the time, no one really guarantees stuff 100%, but people who know how to build authority the right way would have much better chances mostly, unlike the case for 10 separate websites, some might survive the chaos if you're messing some stuff up

And funny enough, after months of contemplating it, it starts to get traffic, and it's not slowing down. Every piece of content and media is created by me on that website. lucky you, I've never had this luck with my fun projects. But I don't care, I still liked them regardless :)

Everything depends on his dream and ambition.
