The best WordPress theme for a news website in 2025?

Hello everyone,

We’ve all been through tough challenges due to Google’s updates, and we’re hoping 2025 will bring a pleasant surprise... So I wish you all a Happy New Year filled with many achievements.

Back to the topic, I’d like to start a new project—a sort of tech news site focused exclusively on mobile phones.

Right from the start, I want to use a winning theme and setup for Google Discover, News, and Google Search.

I know it might seem late to begin such a project now, but I’d like to give this hobby of mine another chance.

Through Google Discover, I see many sites using “Newspaper” by tagDiv, but I find its code quite heavy. I also notice some use GeneratePress, though it’s a bit tricky for a news site.

I’m considering Blocksy and Kandece, but I haven’t seen any website in Google Discover using these two themes...

All of the themes mentioned will do the work,
I personally prefer Newspaper, Kadence & Blocksy over Generatepress, as customization is kinda easier,

Newspaper is not "heavy" by any means, not because the download size is too large for usual themes would make it "heavy" for you as admin or users,
It has plenty of options to customize the website as you wish (colors, fonts, layouts, ads, header, footer, widgets, etc...),
It loads pretty fast (you can get 100-page speed insights score), includes plenty of demo sites to select from, as well as most of the details to change,

The theme on its own won't make a magical difference in terms of ranking for both regular SERPs or Discover tab(s),
As long as it's well optimized for speed, has a clean source code, includes the proper meta tags, schema markups, etc... It should be good to go,
It's just a relatively small part of the overall puzzle, you have to get the right content, do proper overall on-page & get the right links to build authority,
Make sure to include a news schema & sitemap, as well as applying to Google Publisher Center (pretty easy to get accepted) for your specific case

A quick search on themeforest will show the most popular wordpress templates for magazines or newspapers. Of course you may want to go with a theme with more AI features as well.
