Why is there fees for USDT transfers?

Fee is based on type of chain used.

I read in an online post that USDT is printed by some agency. If there are no miners involved, why is there fees in USDT transfer?

USDT is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, TRC-20 token on the TRON network, Solana token on the Solana Network and can exist on other blockchains as well (e.g., Omni, BEP-2, etc.).

So while tether is minted by a centralized firm, it relies on these networks for transactions.

Miners/Validator nodes are confirming your transactions in every block. And each network has a reward for every miner/validator - these become your transaction fees.

Because that is their business model and they need to make revenue.

On every chain, to interact with a contract (which happens when you’re sending a token) you’re going to need to pay gas fees. There’s a couple very cheap options though which cost pretty much next to nothing, like BSC, BASE & POL - all of these have USDT.

Use BSC chain for lowest transaction fee.

You don't have to pay a fee for transferring USDT, nobody's forcing you. But here's the thing: every crypto transaction needs miners or validators. They ain't gonna confirm your transfer for free, that's how they make their bread. Your transaction will just get stuck in the network.

An easy way to figure this out is to look into the network. When people say send me USDT, they also say things like TRC20, ERC20, BEP20 etc.

These are different networks (TRC20 = Tron, BEP20 = Binance Smart Chain, ERC20 = Ethereum) where USDT has Official (Token) Smart Contract for transacting USDT. The fees you see is the gas fee on these networks. USDT does not have its own network, so it cannot dictate the gas fees for the transactions.

Because USDT relies on Ethereum, Tron or other blockchain networks to process transfers, the fees paid are not used to create USDT, but to use the blockchain's infrastructure.

I use a custodial wallet. Transactions between wallets on the same exchange are commission-free and instantaneous. It is more convenient for me and my companion.

Which wallet?

USDT transfer fees happen because it runs on different blockchains like Ethereum, Tron, or Binance Smart Chain. Each of these blockchains charges a fee to process and validate your transaction. For example, Ethereum has high fees when the network is busy, but Tron usually has much lower fees. The fee isn’t for USDT itself but for using the blockchain it’s on. To save money, choose a network like Tron if you want cheaper transfers!

Each chain has gas fees to be able to send tokens back and forth, try using a chain thats cheaper in terms of tx fees - examples of chains i personally use for cheap & fast transfers are SOL, ARB, BASE and POL.
