Does an age verification popup affect Googlebot crawling and indexing?

I’m considering adding an age verification popup on my website where users have to accept or reject that they are over 18. My main concern is whether this type of popup can interfere with Googlebot’s ability to crawl and index the site properly. Could it affect the site’s ranking or content accessibility for Googlebot? Additionally, is it really necessary to have this popup, or can I simply have an adult site without one? Has anyone encountered SEO issues because of age verification popups?

As long as there are links to crawl on the page, Googlebot will be able to access them. If for some reason the initial page with the pop up that you're showing to visitors does not have any anchor tags at all, then that will indeed affect indexing. Age verification popups may be needed in certain countries or to be eligible for some affiliate programs, but they're not needed for Google to be able to index content.

When used improperly, age verification popups can have an impact on SEO. Use appropriate HTTP headers, such as X-Robots-Tag, or grant bots direct access through User-Agent exclusions in your code to make sure Googlebot avoids the popup and prevent problems. To increase crawlability, use HTML/CSS overlay popups instead of JavaScript-based ones. Popups aid in meeting legal and regulatory requirements, but they are not strictly necessary.
