I recently came across a domain that i am trying to decide if I should purchase or not.

here is the background- Recently opened up an online store trying to rank for a competitive keyword. the current domain does not have the keyword in it and is just the company name.

for this example, lets say that I am selling "green" computer screens, but my target market is going to be the keyword "computer screens"

I found a domain that is something like www.greencomputerscreens.com for a decent amount of money.

Since it has part of the target keyword in it, do you think it is worth it for a start up to invest a lot? After the mayday update, just how much weight does the keyword in the domain name carry?

Feedback is much appreciated.

not a bad choice, BUT keep in mind that in your example ...
the 'green' in the name makes your domain only 66% relevant
for "green computer screens", but 100% for the whole phase.

go to google's awords tool - input "computer screens" & see what
some of the top (5+ digits or best 6+) number of searches phrases
are for your term ... from there see IF you can get a domain that
100% matches one of the best terms.

it may not be a good idea to have a company's name in the
domain, as you may have an issue with them down the line. we
could go on for days about this topic, but there have been far too
many cases where a trademark/copyright name or phased domain
is owned by some regular 'joe' & the big company X lets 'joe' develop
PR and traffic (time, expense) and then swoop in and ask ICANN to
transfer the domain to them for 'infringement' - then they just
redirect the traffic.

keep in mind: a keyword heavy domain is just a bonus! there are
many sites that rank in the top 10, 20, 50 that have no keywords
in the domain! make sure to use ...H1, H2, H3 tags on (keyword filled)
headlines and section heads, as well as making sure that incoming
links have anchor text that are keyword rich & you should have a
good chance of getting decent to great search engine traffic.

R,
Thanks for the great info. To clear up any confusion, i was talking about MY company name is the current domain name. No copyright issues there.

Thanks again.
