Why Don’t Backlinks Transfer with 301 Redirects Anymore?

I recently implemented a 301 redirect for one of my websites, expecting the backlinks to transfer seamlessly to the new URL. However, I noticed that the backlinks from the old URL don’t seem to carry over to the new one effectively.

Is this a recent change in how search engines handle 301 redirects? Are there any best practices or specific conditions to ensure backlinks are properly redirected and retain their impact?

After a 301 redirect, you should go to GSC and initiate a change of address on your website.

Your backlinks would be transferred long as the redirect remains intact.

Remember the 301 redirect shouldn't stop at the domain level alone. Ensure that every othet important page(pages with backlinks and those ranking) are individually edirected to the appropriate pages on the new domains. This part is very crucial.

Double-check that the 301 redirect is correctly implemented on your server. This often involves editing your .htaccess file or using a plugin

They do, something is wrong with your domain, redirect, backlinks, etc...
It should take some time to see the full effect as well, when did you place it?

You're wrong. The link juice from the backlinks does get transfered with aa 301 redirect.

Did you make sure the redirect(s) is working?
Did you redirect all of the old domain URLs that have links pointing to them?

Ahrefs is just a tool, you only need to make sure the redirect is on point

I've noticed that too.... recently bought a small competitor who had great backlinks 301 that bitch to my website.....4 months passed no backlink passed in GSC.....triple checked the 301 is done correctly....I suspect that this is a G countermeasure against serp manipulation.

I've noticed the time it takes to for Google to recognize the backlinks can vary widely. I had one 301 redirect picked up quickly recently, while others have taken months. Not sure why.

in my experience as of late not only 301 doesn't transfer backlinks to new site, GSC actually cleans out backlinks from the original site, and breaking 301 doesn't restore even a fraction of those backlinks back .. a few year back i bought a few dozen articles on fiverr and build maybe 150-200 GSC reported backlinks to that site. tried 301 to new domain, with address change no less, then a few months later broke 301 as it wasn't doing anything positive, a few more months later 150-200 backlinks were now barely a dozen... this doesn't necessarily mean though that those links disappeared from google and/or that google stopped considering them and juice stopped flowing thru them... it's just they are not in GSC anymore..

It will take some time and you need to be patient. Sometimes, it will take more than a month. Just make sure that the redirect is implemented correctly. You can focus on adding more quality articles and building backlinks from quality sites to your website.

it is not a fact that they will be displayed in the console, but in my experience, after setting up a redirect, everything will be transferred for up to 3 months
