Question about No Follow links.

Are they valuable or not? I hear people say it's important you have no follow links because it looks more natural to Google. But I always wonder, if they are no follow, then how do Google see them in the first place? Do Google see all links, but only class some as proper backlinks?

Would be great if somebody could explain this to me.

Yes, G will see nofollow links. I've been indexed from nofollow links alone. I get them so it does look more natural because only someone doing SEO would have backlinks that only were from high PR do-follow domains, so it's easier to spot.

Don't aim specifically for nofollows to diversify, just don't leave them completely out of the picture.

The no-follow links are essentially ignored by google (or that was what I thought), but if you say that you've been indexed on only no-follows, G must still record them to account for the paranoia of some webmasters who freak out.

When you say you were indexed, was the ranking noteworthy? What page did you get too, and how competetive would you say the niche was?

It would make more sense that some value was still placed on the no-follows, because from everything that I've come to learn about Google, one thing stands out, and that is that nothing about them is cut and dry, things always seem to swing both ways every now and again.

Nofollow links are actually quite effective in my experience. It all depends on the authority of the page giving you the link and the positioning/size of the link.

I got a PR6 domain with a specialized post that linked to me with nofollow right below the title in super large letters.

The next day: indexed, ranked, shows up for lots of keywords even using duplicate content.

You just cant predict the results with G untill you try it for yourself, I think that this the best advice for OP... Google just takes so many factors into consideration when ranking pages, we probably havent even thought of half of them, lol

Yes, always be sure to use SOME no follow links...as you said, looks natural to Google. Think about it..it's bound to happen if your site was getting legit backlinks

ALL LINKS MATTER!

You want to get links of EVERY type.. forums, blogs, wikis, parahosts, articles, profiles directories, emails, groups, social networks, real time updaters (twitter)... it doesn't matter what the tag says, you NEED all those links and every link you can get if you want to have a hope in getting SERPs.

Also keep your link building consistent. Don't do a 1000 link blast one day and sit around, you need to have a link velocity of incoming that is within a consistent range, as soon as you stop, off to the sandbox you go. Start with anything from 10 links a day, to 200. Whatever you are capable of maintaining. It doesn't have to be EVERY day either, it just has to be consistent. If you keep doing a link build say once a week, then that works too. Google isn't going to pickup on all your links right away anyways.
