If you are serious and want to make money from a job then never ask for upfront or advance payment
Do high quality work on trial basis for 4-10 hours
And if you do it properly. You will be hired
Asking upfront is a no no.

If trial work don't work good then you may have nothing much to loose other then few hours of your time
Asking money upfront means you are not serious just want quick chunk of money
Money made in most cases from long term
Be it stocks :D

What? How is this a relevant or related example?

Why would anyone want to waste even a few hours of their life?

It all depends on ticket size. If someone cannot pay even $10 - $20 upfront, then probably they are not a serious client in the first place.

What I usually do is ask say 10% of the project amount as advance and then divide the project into say 4 tranches of 25% to build trust to avoid getting scammed.

The most negative and scammy experiences I ever had were on FB groups. Just saying.

Sorry stock example wasa bad relation
If someone can't pays 10 or 20$
I disagree with it
Everyone thinks it is a scam 96% of people

Well, most freelancers and agencies I know incl. me take payment upfront first for new customers, when a relation with the client is formed later on he gets invoices after job is done or in project installments if it is a big job.

Great advice to be scammed
Pay first, receive later
That's how it works

Take some time to find reliable projects that can give you quick returns.
