MayDay - What Are the Quality Signals?

How do the search fields come into play if they all have one? I just don't understand. All manufacturers and all online retailers are going to have a search field. All forums and blogs have them too... I don't mean to be daft... I just don't understand what I'm supposed to be looking for. Not looking for a handout. Just trying to understand the discussion.

No biggie if its work... It sounds interesting. I just don't understand comment and it sounded like an observation worthy of understanding... wasn't debunking or disbelieving.

Hey Ipopbb,

I read your other topics and firstable I want to specify that I have nowhere near your experience nor knowledge of SEO. I found the info you shared absolutely outstanding and much better than the usual reharshed stuff sold by the self-proclaimed gurus.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my explanation in my previous post, but unfortunately English isn't my first language. I hope MrGemini clarified the meaning, as I couldn't make up a better explanation than his one :p

Keep in mind that what I shared was just observations I made looking at the serp variations of just one of my site, and of course we'd need more data to have certainties.
But we have to start somewhere, right? :)

Can you do something like add a search bar to it somewhere on the page? Look at the number one guy and his fields and try to add something similar, but doesn't need to be functional.

This is just to see if google is looking for the right code elements, or is testing out the functionality of it. Wait a bit, and lets see what happens. After that, try either adding other search elements via links on the page (again if possible), then finally add a real search function that works. Basically progressively keep adding those quality signals to match 'search' until you see an impact. If you can't do it that's ok, but it would certainly help you get a grasp on just how much is going on, and of course get your site back in the game. ;)

Yep, I was already planning doing something like what you just suggested, and of course, I'll keep you updated in this thread. I just hope more people are going to share their own experiences here, as we have to understand this new algo as soon as possible

Hi guys, anyone got any ides to which might be the best way to design a shopping clone site, trying to build a site like amazon, walmart style sites, with like a grid design where i can add product and have some content within the site, checked out some of the datafeedr style and popshops, but cant find a thing and i really want to get away from the blog style template, any ideas

It depends on where you are getting your product data from and in what format.

Personally I think the Wordpress platform is plenty extensible to be just a shop. You can design away the blog aspects to it, and there are templates out there that aim to do that.

In terms of design, I recommend you include product attribute search direct links right in the menu, and list of brands. Take notes from Amazon, not Walmart. Amazon knows what they are doing, Walmart is just half-assing it to keep their shareholders happy that they are doing something online.

Datafeedr looks ok from what I gathered looking at it a while back. Can certainly take away some of the headaches of managing multiple datafeeds. If you want to see a nice Amazon site, check out this puppy:

Code:
ipadcasestore.org/

Take one look at that and you don't think "oh gee another WP site" .. but it is.. and they are using a plugin called WP Zon Builder. Of all the plugins for amazon I seen, this appears to be the most feature rich and flexible.

Good luck!

yeah i've got the wp zon plugin and never really liked it but that theme is awesome looking, i have a plugin that makes entering a datafeed a piece of cake and i was just going to build a home page with products and some content and see how that will rock n roll, datafeedr is ok but forget paying $97 every month.

Anyone know what theme
Code:
http://www.mensdigitalwatches.co.uk/
is using?

The only plugins that will really work at the mo will be reviewazon and wpzon or wp robot, they all work great and can be found here, wp robot is the only one but i have a clone type plugin like wp bot, the only thing with it is that it has links in each post footer but i use another plugin that makes the links no follow. spent a f..king week trying find a way of setting up the stites another option is videos, but can they really work to get vistors to our sites

Ok, let me try breaking this down with the example we mentioned before that is close to what Frankie pointed out 'search cat food'
...
I'm not sure how I can explain it any clearer. Perhaps another term would be more helpful? One you are familiar with?

I hope this has helped clarify.

Helped a lot. Thanks given.

No worries... I am not upset at all. Just thought you might be on to something and I wanted to understand what you were seeing. I'm no guru... just insanely methodical. You saw something I didn't. You understood it easily and even though I am still grappling with its role in the big picture (as I see it in my head... ). Totally all my problem.

I try continually harder to not be judgemental or just plain mental. I appreciate that you shared your observations and sincerely hope you continue to do so. This thread wasn't too interesting for me until your comment. It's all good stuff, but I've been following the topic pretty heavily for a few months now. Good observation.

P.S. English is my primary language and sometimes it takes me several tries and I still get things wrong. ;)

That site is not using WP. So the template is not anything to get.

I don't mind using non wordpress sites ;) Already thought about ripping his but then again ripping isn't always the smartest move. If wordpress, what exact wordpress theme / plug in would YOU recommend. I saw the recommendation of others in here but somehow I don't like any of them too much, they are not as plain and simply as the website that guy is using.

The engineer goes to jail for stealing trade secrets and yahoo gets sued for damages and is put under court order to not act on or share the trade secrets.

Stealing trade secrets is covered by existing federal laws. Patent law doesn't protect those

I've read that a lot of MNA sites have lost their rankings. The MNA strategy focuses on products which are now classified under shopping so google is looking for shopping sites and amazon and shopping sites have taken over in rankings for products. But if I click on fewer shopping sites, I can see some MNA sites show up in the first page. It seems that google is trying to categorize the web and if your site doesn't fall in the category of the search term, it isn't regarded as relevant.

Well if you like it that much, just HTTrack it. :)

That's whats going on. I am sure you are going to see more and more of this. People who build new MNA sites are not going to go anywhere near the top ever again.

Speaking of MNA.. I posted about what I would do in another thread these days with the new update. How I would build a site. I figure I should share it here since the quality signals has gotten everyone thinking about how they are going to approach things next.

---------

If you must know, I am working on three e projects right now. Only one of them is based on keyword researching into picking a niche. How did I do it?

Step 1: Searched google for 'top 100 adsense keywords 2010'
Step 2: Took the top 20 and ran a keyword check with MS
Step 3: Looked at who was least competitive on allintitle and had decent traffic
Step 4: Jumped on google and looked at who was playing in that space.
Step 5: Went back to MS (Market Samurai) and dug deeper into the keyword term. Wow there was a lot more to it than I thought, and more pockets out there.
Step 6: Checked out handful of those pockets. There is some pretty solid sites out there, so I know there is money.

Decided to go for it.

For the other two niches, I decided to hit two big traffic markets starting from the top. I will create mega authority sites with all the various elements google wants to see. My content is going to start in the keyword phrases that I know I can compete in first. If you were doing MNA, you would have registered a domain, made articles yada yada. That's not what I am doing. I will put it into my big site, and create the appropriate content for that niche. Of course I will go for the product terms first so I got the money stuff ready. :) ... Then move on to information based terms. Site will include:

  • Shop area with reviews
  • Community area with videos, images, blogs, forums, wiki, facebook, myspace
  • Update area - gbuzz, twitter
Shop get the affiliate sales while the Community gets the ad space for cpa, adsense, and the like. Will start off with an OpenX server as well so when I reach 5000 visitors a day, I can start selling my own ad space and making the real money then .

Each site name has an identifiable brand. There is the possibility in the future of even creating my own product. Don't know if I want that hassle though. The domain names combine the core term with something else. Using that I can market it in a certain fashion. Best of all, its UNIQUE. This means I can carve out my own space online as a brand.

As I build out, I will continue to just keep on building more and more brands, topics, keywords into it so that eventually I will be going head to head with some of the bigger boys out there.

Will I not rank on some terms? Sure.
Will I end up with a big dudd? Not likely.
What if Google deindexes my site? Not likely, but if so, I'm plugged into social media traffic sources as well.

There you go. This is what I would do. Rather, what I am doing. :)

--------------

That was directed to people who are into building MNAs.

You know, the recent additional of the Wonder wheel has gotten me wondering if the levels of terms actually does have any effectiveness. I mean, has anybody done a comparison of the Wonder wheel against the top ranked sites to see if they do indeed have a similar keyword set? I like the concept of using it in sites as your levels of content, but it seems to early to tell if it really is effective or not.

@Gemini: Can you show a similar site that to the ones you are building? I just can't see the set up in my head somehow. Cheers

I'm lost amongst all this..some people seem to have been hit so hard while others have suffered almost nothing.

The first 5 listings I saw were all pages full of mens digital watches. #5 being Amazon. ;) Hey, but check out #3 guy.. he is:

mensdigitalwatches.c0.uk
http://www.mensdigitalwatches.c0.uk
Now when you look at his page, you can see that he is again consistent with showing product data. He mixed in a little content on the bottom of the pages, but stuck mostly to the product data, and organized his categories by brand. Almost perfect. If this guy wasn't so lazy, and put a little more effort into it, he could have #1, and he is an affiliate store for the same guy that is sitting in #7 on the same query. :)

MisterGemini,

This site may not be a good example of why a shopping site is ranking at #3. There may be some blackhat techniques involved for this to rank at #3. If you look at the source code, all you'll see are 3 lines, which means the rest are cloaked. So we don't know exactly what is there that only the search engine could see. There are also only 2 or 3 links pointing to it according to Yahoo.

BTW, Thanks for the insights you are freely sharing with the BHW community. Keep up the good work.

Regards.

Have you looked into the Shopperpress theme? I believe it is geared more towards ecom sites but there may be an option to use it for affiliate sites as well.

shopperpress.com

Do a site: check on it. All his pages have been cached so you can see exactly what google sees. The lack of lines is consistent with what we have been discovering. The quality onpage signals that match will rank better than the site with thousands of lines. I saw this happen in every single keyword I found, if the quality signals are there. This site has nothing but product data, which is exactly what the search query called for.

I know about cloaking, if this guy was cloaking it would be pretty evident. Also I haven't experienced one single redirect in the site when looking it over. :)

I'm lost amongst all this..some people seem to have been hit so hard while others have suffered almost nothing.

Put together what we have all found and shared in this thread and you will get a better understanding of why.

That was the point of this whole thing, to understand what this quality signal stuff is all about and how it is impacting the SERPs arena. I think with everyone's contributions and analysis here we have gained a better understanding overall.
