We're picking up caught/dropped/expired domains & building shell sites to link out to our money site(s).
My question is how many PB's can we have on a single IP to avoid footprint?
Would best practice be 1:1, or can we get away with 4 or 5?

*I'm aware there are multiple other factors to consider when reducing footprint.

4 or 5! hell no dude, base jumping with a yarn of thread is safer!

1:1 all day, every day, for the best results, it's good old-fashioned programmer philosophy, segment for results, and clarification. When you put 2 sites on a pbn, you then don't know if its the site, or the pbn hosting that is or isn't working.

Also there are a number of good pbn hosting providers, even a couple of very professional ones in the MP here. They approach footprints in different ways.

Appreciate the quick response!
We're handling it ourselves, with good results to date. Point noted - 1:1! Will take a look at PBN hosting here, too! Thanks again.

This. Older versions of backlink checkers used to have a unique IP metric.

ideally 1 per each C-class IP.

But that's not everything you need to pay attention to. You need to have different EVERYTHING (IPs, hosters, emails, personal and private info, theme designs, etc.)

Check this PBN building guide for more details:

really bad idea,
the whole thing about "unique class C IPs" was made up for cheap marketing stuff,
basically for the crap PBN hosting sellers to sell their services, leaving an obvious footprint,

here's a bunch of IPs with unique class C for example:
Code:
102.56.42.8
102.56.75.201
102.56.2.53
102.56.79.230
102.56.25.43
that's an obvious pattern, usually tied up with the same hosting location, making things even worse,
better to get unique IPs with unique class A/B/C/D, whatever seems natural,

OP, you can host 30-40% of your PBN websites in the same server & use Cloudflare, unique CF account per website,
Just make sure you're not leaving any footprints that could leak the server IP,
That should do the work for small PBNs when starting out,
I wouldn't use that if you're selling links or investing in big PBN or/and good domains

If you have a head, just think with it.
Suppose you are a Google employee and you are tasked with finding all the parameters by which the algorithm will screen out PBNs, just turn on your head what a Google developer will do to accomplish this.

1. Cloudflare. If a site gets a lot of top links from sites hosted on CloudFalre? Can this happen in real life? Considering that the total number of sites in the world on CloudFlare 0.1% of all sites, is it realistic that all the top links are from CloudFlare? - BANNED!

2. IP. Common IP of shared hosting, can be tens of thousands of sites on one IP - 5 of your sites on this one common IP real? - YES! IP dedicated private, only for you - 5 sites on this IP and all refer to your site, real? - BAN!

3. NS-servers. Public DNS servers, on them up to 70% of all sites in any country, or up to 20% of sites around the world - 20 of your sites on these same NS servers are real? - YES! Unique NS-servers, used only by you, 5 sites on them and all link to your site, real? - BAN!

4. Layout and design - one template for 5 sites and all lead to your site - suspicious? YES! Sites will be sent to assessors for in-depth analysis.

And further down the list, just turn on your head and think before you do anything.

the safer the better for sure. But I've not heard of links from different class-C IPs being a problem yet (well, as long as you don't get dozens of RDs from the same IP, that can be bad indeed)...

A good PBN should not leave any footprints, whenever algorithmically or manually checked,
You surely don't want to invest 5-6 figures and get the whole network penalized just to save a small percentage of the investement,

Many people just get things wrong, typically a PBN should be seen as assets, which should be preserved, possibly enhanced and hold their value,
If you build a really decent PBN, taking care of everything (content, design, on-page & even off-page), while eliminating any sort of footprints,
Not only it would make you rank, it could be preserved to be used for years & sold for the same or higher price of the investement made

A good PBN should not leave any footprints
of course! But what I'm trying to tell you is that class C IPs are not dangerous yet. Maybe google will start hunting them, maybe not. We don't know what the future brings. But for now you can have multiple class C IPs linking to your money site without tanking it. (note: by "multiple" I mean few, not 100s)

Ideally, one per IP. But if you have a lot of PBNs, you could reuse the same IP to target another money site. However, ensure they are not in the same niche and never link to each other. Basically, Site A, hosted on IP A, targets money site A. Site B, hosted on IP A, targets money site B.

You can host a maximum of two blogs on the same IP address. If you have more blogs and are on a tight budget, consider opting for shared hosting.

I have been giving 3-6 PBNs per 1 ip address for years and it usually gives good results.

1 PBN per IP is recommended. Using the same IP for multiple domains is not recommended and it would be a footprint.

It is recommended to 1 PBN site per IP address for maximum safety, as multiple sites on the same IP could result in search engines penalizing the site.

5 domains for 1 hosting acc
+ set up a Cloudflare for 4 domains

To minimize the risk of penalties from search engines like Google, it's generally recommended to limit the number of Private Blog Network (PBN) sites per IP to no more than 1 or 2.
