which country to move to?

Let's say you got yourself 500k usd.

Myself, im living in a shithole of a country (east europe) - 4 months of harsh winter, pessimistic ppl, etc.

I can't stand the cold, I think people are supposed to live in warmth.



What is your dream country to live in? Personally I dont want to live in a poor country.

my choices are: south france, south japan(okinawa), south ireland, new zealand.

please elaborate on your choices.

I said Kauai, but saw that several people mentioned the south of France. Being french, I can testify. In the south, you'll get the heat all year, the beach, the girls, the wine, the sky is almost always blue, and french isn't hard at all to learn, if you learn it there.

OP, stop looking, it seems you've just found what you're looking for, go pack, Nizza/Provence is waitin for ya
but one thing is sure, you'll need money to live there...

I like living here in Switzerland. If you're willing to integrate and learn the german language at least then I'm sure you're very welcome. With 500k bucks you can do a lot here too..

I see the advantages: Secure (no war, political stable, low crime rates), very nice healthcare, nice people, nice chicks, many possibilities, not to big not to small, modern infrastructure, clean and so on. The climate is nice, not too warm not too cold.

The only place where I perhaps want to move would be Hawaii But from every other place I was, I liked returning to Switzerland again.

OP, If you get depressed by cold weather and the typical cloudy haze that comes with it, then pick a place with white sandy beaches, blue water, and a good internet connection.

Well you said you dont want to live in a poor country and you want warmth, so that sort of narrows it down abit. I reckon AU and NZ are your best choices.

You can live a very comfortable life with lots of warmth in somewhere like Perth/Sydney/Brisbane/Auckland.

If I weren't a cheap ass I'd move back to Switzerland. It's the perfect country for me. It has tons of outdoor activities that I love (sailing, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, etc.), the temperature is mild (as long as you're not actually IN the alps), the location is great for easily traveling to other countries via train or plane so I can feed my travel itch.

However I'm a cheap ass so I just visit my friends instead of living there.

I would second your suggestions of Bosnia and Croatia. When most Americans think of Bosnia they think of the war but I have friends who have been to both and they love them. Fabulous scenery, weather, people, food all for a good price.

I general, if you really have 500k I would spend some holidays in different countries and see what you like the most.

I'm currently bouncing around the US while I get some business stuff taken care of then I'll be hitting the road again. I've been traveling for a couple years now, spending 1-7 months in any place that seems interesting.

I lived in a small town outside of Geneve when I lived there and didn't have a problem meeting people but it probably helped that I was an au pair so I was living with a family who introduced me around.

The lack of sea didn't both me because I was just a 15 minute bus ride from Lac Leman and I don't love sand but when I did get the urge it was a quick flight to Nice for the weekend (although there's no sand there).

I've also heard that parts of croatia (coastal towns) are getting $$ which is too bad.

I'm living in the "other part" of Switzerland, the german area (central Switzerland). Here are the people a little bit less open but nice too. I don't like the French language, but this is only a little bit personal because I was forced years ago to learn it in school and it was soooo hard for me

What I can add is that in the different areas of Switzerland the ppl are very different.. But again, it's really nice here for everyone who wants to integrate and don't just want to take and don't give...

I'm a lucky guy because I've got two passports (Swiss and US - yeah I know my english sucks but I growned up here) so perhaps Hawaii would be a possibility for me in the future.. But for now and for my business I really like it here in Switzerland.

One thing I didn't see anywhere else: I really like it clean I didn't see many places which really where clean and where wasn't any trash in the nature and so on.

Spent six months in both of those places as a Marine on a UN peacekeeping mission back in 1995. And I have been to Australia, NZ, Thailand, PI, Japan, all over Europe, Korea, and some other places in SE Asia.

exactly what i think, i've also been in Bosnia once and in Croatia a couple of times (i worked in the traveling biz) and yes, they're becoming more and more expensive not just Croatia, but Bosnia also, Russians own almost everything there (hotels) and plenty of rich Russians take their holiday there

Yes, but have you been back? Basing your opinion on Bosnia and Croatia on what you saw during a military mission immediately after a war may not be the best thing. I would imagine it's changed just a BIT in the last decade. That would be like visiting New Orleans on August 30, 2005 and telling people they should never go there because of your experience.

I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned Cyprus, the Greek side.

This island has British / Greek culture, the signs are in English, it is a warm climate, all year round, and has positive tax laws.

They are also about to join the euro, and there will be plenty of cheap property going when the eventually sort of reunification. (thats why you must buy on the Greek side for now)

There are established IM'ers living there, and 2 more have emigrated in the last 3 months, to my knowledge.

i've never been a soldier, but my father was and he doesn't want to go to any countries where he had stationed in the Cold War and he doesn't have too good opinion from that countries even if decades has passed since then and i don't blame him at all

Germany, there you can be sure that there will not be poorness, but the weather isn't so great. So maybe move to france, but the language is hard

Its **** here, yes if you like 9 months of *** weather and cold and cranky and crouchy people ANYWHERE. I lived in the states for 8+ years and i can compare now how ****y Germany is.

As for spain..i hear so many bad things about spain, but since i am in IM and do everything online i dont care about the economy in Spain. I am not moving to spain to look for a job. Moving to southern spain in a few months and will do IM from my pool. I can get an appartment there for €300 which includes a pool, sun roof, garden and 1 mile distance to the beach. F*ck Germany. The other benefit is that everyone in that area in Spain speaks English or German. It CAN not be that bad even with their economy down.
