Companies know you're using a VPN because your IP address isn't a residential IP but rather a datacenter IP. Say you use PIA, they have like 200 servers around the globe. Awesome. All OpenAI has to do is keep a list of those 200 IP addresses and they know you're using a VPN. OpenAI definitely has the resources to keep track of that sort of thing.
