It's a vague and basic question which more likely than not has been answered a 100 times in the forum. I'd advise to use the "search" function to find a lot of information relevant to you.

Prior to the RankRain update, on-page SEO was a simple case of having a checklist and making sure that your content has every item on that checklist ticked.
That cannot be said today.
At the end of the day when it comes to on-page SEO, your content has to be engaging enough for people to click on your site and stay there.
Ideally, they should load page after page as they get deeper and deeper into the guts of your site because they find value in your site.
RankBrain rewards this behavior.
It looks at the user experience and detects patterns.
If it notices that when people search a target keyword and they pull up your site and they immediately leave, eventually, that's gonna count against you, and your ranking will get demoted.
On the other hand, if Google notices that when people see your site as a result on its search engine, and people click through and stay there, that's gonna count for you.
And more likely than not, your ranking may improve.
This is important, and I would submit that this is the centerpiece of Google's quality hierarchy or quality determination technology, if you want to call it that.
Everything else is just basically a tweak or a refinement.
The problem that AI poses against this is that AI makes it so easy to generate content in bulk.
A lot of the human engagement, a lot of the fact-checking, and a lot of the value experiences go out of the way because they're displaced by this rush to basically make thousands of bets against Google, hoping that enough of those pages get ranked and ultimately all these blind hits would somehow someway result in the site owner making a lot more money.
Unfortunately, that's now the case, but so many people believe in that.
Focus on what's important, focus on taking care of the experience of the people who read your content, and deliver the search intent behind the keywords that they use to find your content.

Backlinks are most important. If you manage multiple sites, I suggest you strongly to learn SEO. There are other factors involved as well like good content.
