How do you get proof of submission? Just trust the freelancer?

A lot of more advanced users already have a list of directories they like to use or have a relationship with a directory submission provider that uses their own proprietary list. However, for those that aren't at that point yet or don't have those resources, having a good solid list like this can be helpful.

The way I track it is by setting up an email account that we both have access to. This email is used in all of the submissions that the freelancer does. That way, the freelancer knows that I could be coming in and checking at any time, so he better be completing the work.

I hardly ever check it, but just the notion that I CAN is usually enough to make sure it gets done correctly.
