I'm particularly interested in hearing about the risks and potential pitfalls of starting and running a dating app. Whether it’s from a business, technical, or legal standpoint, what are the biggest challenges that I should be aware of?

Very risky, spammers and scammers you will have to fight both.

moderation for abuse
moderation for inappropriate pictures
dealing with refunds and fraud.
various abuse...what stops random bhw member from signing up with 1000 fake female profiles every day and DMing every user with some cpa offer. or a hacker compromising your system and leaking customer data.
think of anything that can go wrong and have a system in place to mitigate it.
its nice to own the offer, but lots of risk and responsibility comes with it.

I refuse to believe that you can't come around registering or offering an app everywhere under fake identity.

This denies every possible attack on you, which is a sign of relief to start with.

You need to be a giant to face mentioned problems, and by disabling clickable links, adding layers when registering, even asking for ID (just to make it harder), filtering accounts with bad names, no enough data such few images and bio.

Adult images, CPA offers, everything can be easily filtered.


But do you really want to do it? For example Instagram doesn't give a shit.


You can even abuse your own app and make bunch of cash just by simulating fake account and clickable cpa offer for example.

Send it to all users and later ban account. You are the boss in your backyard. Hey, no problem man.

its common tactic for tiny dating apps. paywall everything. load up fake female profiles under your control. DM all new registrants. and they cant see it without paying $9.99/month.
its kind of legal grey area. i recall reading 1 or 2 lawsuits about it. maybe it was ashley madison who participated in this unethical behavior.

online dating verification is nice now there are turnkey systems in place. i just found random vendor. $1.89 per verification with minimum commitment of $99. next just hope you have a programming team capable of implementing all the pieces to work together seamlessly.

several years ago when i was on the other side of the wall, i found a very cool product that monitored user behavior with "ai" to detect abnormal and malicious behavior to stop abuse. which is pretty easy to identify if you are an abuser. for if you were to monitor the behavior of legitimate users vs botters, automaters, promoters; the contrast is immense. lots of really high tech tools are out there.

Except for keeping us OF spammers out of your app, you'll also need attractive/hot people (which are real). I think this is your main marketing problem. Or you could also specialize in the niche of "scum of the earth", but then you'll face huge competition in that niche by other start-up dating apps, since it seems to be a very popular niche for start-ups to target. Haha.

Creating a real site app is a huge budget and staffing endeavor. Plus billing, moderation etc and stuff that can't be discussed publically..

You can test your concept with a white label dating site. Google is your friend,

If I can give you one recommendation it is to focus on one specific group of people. General dating apps like Tinder or Bumble dominate the market. These business models and apps are often "the winner takes it all" apps. There are one or two, which have all the users. Its similar to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Whatsapp.

If you focus on one specific sub niche it will work much better. Also, you will need a unique selling point. For Bumble, it was that only women can message first.

If you want to make high profit, try to make a hook up app. Sex sells. Guys will pay.

However, the main obstacle you will face is to actually get females to sign up. I talked with a few guys who work at Tinder in Korea and they told me the user base in Korea is 5% women and 95% men. its their biggest challenge.

what makes you differnet and worth using over the so many others more established ones out there?

I started my own civilization and my own social network. Nothing hard.

People here will manipulate you into thinking x or y but they don't understand inputs mostly and think there's one or any amount of reasons behind things.

The only thing you need is you need to capture their data and provide something to them. For example, a good algorithm or search engine, or tutorials, extra offers.

Why not create 1 million dating apps and interconnect them.
