I'm like a grocery store merchant. You can buy $0.10 “candy” in my store, or $10k “luxury cake” in my store.

But whether it's a “candy” customer or a “luxury cake” customer, you need to spend a lot of time teaching them how to eat it properly.

Often times you have to help them wipe off the "crumbs" from their mouths.

I have questions:
1, If you were seller, would you offer the same service to both types of customers?
2, Do you struggle with not serving your ”candy“ clients?

Many of you here are experienced marketers and I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

I think as with most things in business you should follow the 80/20 rule as in 80% of your revenue will come from 20% of your clients so your time and resources should also be allocated accordingly. I'm doing that actively with clients from this forum and it just works.

Where we live, we call it the 2-8 principle, and what it means is that getting 80% of the customers is easy, but the remaining 20% will be hard to get.

But it's great to hear you explain it.

Not really, it is a matter of choice. Put your energy where the money is.

“We are the trunk, they are the leaves. ”

This was told to me by one of my professors when I first joined the university, when I was the class president. He called it the “tree organization” principle, where the class leader should be the trunk and the class members should be the leaves, and you need to spend your time on the branches, not the leaves.

I wrote him a letter saying that my class had only 44 leaves (because there were only 44 students in my class), and that taking care of 44 adults wasn't a very difficult thing to do. I'm going to care what the leaves think.

“We're a company, not a charity.”

When I stepped into my job a few years ago, he told me we needed to do employee performance reviews, at the time we were making about $0.10 profit on an item, and if you based the employee's performance on the employee's performance, it would only be $100 per month per employee. The average wage in our state was about $400 a month.

In the end this company only lasted six months.

In both instances is that I did learn something.

I've always been a person who can't prioritize.

I think it's time for a change.

If I was in your place, I would completely stop offering those cheap candies. I will only sell the rich cake or whatever. That way, I don’t have to deal with 100k customers for making 10k. I can just have 1 customer and spend the rest of my time on something I like.

It does me good, but I always fantasize that one day they will come to me and buy a “luxury cake”.

I worry that they'll be served because I didn't treat them like “God” when I sold them the ”candy“. When they want to buy a “luxury cake”, they will not choose me.

That's what I'm torn about.

I'm now making about 30 times more than I was before. But people are greedy and I want to reach $150k profit per month.

If I only sell “luxury cakes”, I won't be able to reach my goal in a short time.

I'm a bit anxious, but I really want to do it.

Oh well, it does depend on what you are selling. For what we do, it can be an hour of work as well as 3 months of work and banging head on the wall. So, the time and complexity aren’t the same for “luxury cake” items. But if you are giving away same effort for 0.1$, I don’t think it is worth. But yeah… You are right. It might work for some types of services.

People who buy “cake” meet more people who like “cake”.

Put time and better service into them and you'll get twice the results with half the effort.

And for the few 10k clients you have, you can make the service absolutely exceptional as you don't have to waste your mental energy on cheapo clients.

Those cheapo clients who expect the world for 5 bucks.
