Hey all! I'm Vela and clearly new. I signed up for two reasons primarily. I am trying to create a following on X and want to ask about it and discuss my strategy. But also more generally most marketing, and online marketing especially, places are either trying to sell you something, or they are... fluffy. I'm interested in provable results.

These two reasons reflect my short term needs, create a following on X reasonably efficiently and quickly so I can start earning an income. Versus my long term desires, learn enough about online marketing to make this my business.

I'm quite excited to be here.

Welcome to BHW!

Any reason you're starting with X as opposed to another social media platform?

Welcome!

I hope you become the Carlos Vela of social media. He was a great football player.

Convenience in a way. But concretely there's a few considerations. I have a passion project in an adult niche that I'm starting with, and since I am doing it with someone else I have a few constraints there. I doubt it'll get me much, I'd be surprise if I manage 5k followers with a 1% conversion rate. But I'm taking this as an educational opportunity. I don't know what I'm doing now, so I intend to learn during this process.

I believe (I might be wrong, but it makes sense and seems to be what others are saying) that the way to grow organically is by interacting and getting known by people who already have a certain number of followers. I have some idea how to do that on X, but I don't know how to do it on other platforms. I also have some idea of how to get basic metrics on X which I don't know how to do on other platforms. I also came across a guide on here which was simple to follow, clear, and relatively complete.

I'm atrocious with other media like video or images still. So while I have some content on an IG account I'm parking that for the moment.

I'm doing all of this between a job as a cleaner and a chronic illness. So managing my energy so I can sustain what I'm doing in the long term is important to me. I struggle to write longer content reliably, and I'm prone to overthinking and not sticking to tasks when I don't know what I'm doing. So there's also an element of pick something, anything, and make it work.

So in summary I'm not particularly attached to X. It's the one where I have some idea of what to do, and the things that seem necessary are probably within my capacity to do. That's kind of it.

Have you considered starting out on Reddit instead of X?

Welcome!

X ads might be a good thing I think they're less restrictive than other platforms.

Sooorta. I definitely have more experience with the platform. But all of my interaction with Reddit to date has been "How do I do XYZ?" style posts. I have less of a mental model for how engagement works on Reddit than I do X. And it feels like I would have to learn to do longer form content? I struggle to write longer stuff reliably. Like a conversation like this I can manage quite easily. But coming up with something out of the blue is quite a struggle for me.

Is there a particular reason you're asking about Reddit?

Thank you. ☺️

I'm actually not doing ads at the moment. I don't have enough surplus funds to run an ad campaign. And I don't know how to manage an effective one anyway.

I only ask because I’d personally rather promote adult niches through Reddit. I’m not huge into X, but they don’t have structured audiences like subreddits, which are easier to target. Is there a stigma that Reddit is more difficult? I wonder what the conversion rate would be between the two platforms. I’d be willing to bet money that Reddit performs better.

One method I see a lot that is free to grow an account is by posting similar content under popular post.

This way the algorithm is serving the perfect audience and comment scrollers will see what you post first and could comment on it looking for others opinions.

Hey man, welcome to the forum! That sucks about the rule changes, but dont beat yourself up; youve got resilience.

That does make sense yes. It's more that for me to develop a strategy for Reddit I would have to do more research. For X I'm basically following a variant of potah's method here: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/how-i-grow-my-twitter-followers-from-86-to-3000-in-2-months.1490281/ It ties the knowledge I already have together sufficiently for me to feel it's a decent starting point. I've not yet found something similar for Reddit sadly.
