On a particular website, I have a situation where visitors hit my pages and quickly see the link they're after and so don't stick around for long.

I'm thinking of - not 'burying' the link, exactly - but embedding it further down the page, so visitors stays on site longer, reading/scanning the page and encountering more potential money-making methods along the way to finding the outgoing link, which is actually unlikely to bring a return.

I hope that made sense. Just wondering if this would increase the engagement rate.

Embedding the link further down the page increases visitor however, it's essential to ensure that the preceding content is valuable and relevant to maintain a positive user experience. You need to test different options and find that middle ground.

This might get them to stick around longer, checking out your content before they find the link.
Just make sure you don’t make it too hard to find, though. The idea is to keep them interested without making them feel like you’re hiding what they came for. This way, you could increase the time they spend on your site

embedding the link further down the page can increase engagement also you can add captcha so user need to spend more time.

Yes make sure the information above is interesting and draws the reader in before they get to the final link.

I'm sure the following steps will help attract visitors:
  • Understand what your audience needs and values in your content.
  • Avoid complex terms that might confuse readers. Aim for a tone that is easy to understand.
  • Break up content into manageable sections. Use headings and subheadings to guide readers through your article.
  • Avoid lengthy paragraphs. Instead, use short paragraphs and bullet points to highlight key information.
  • Add images, infographics, or videos to enhance understanding and engagement.
  • Link to other relevant content on your site to keep users engaged and encourage them to spend more time on your website.
  • Allow users to comment on your posts and make sure to respond to their questions or feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to give this some thought. As mentioned, the actual link the visitor wants is unlikely to convert to real money, so I try to cross-promote the visitor to alternative money-generating leads.

I think you're all right - move the link down the page - hit 'em with a sales pitch before they get where they want - but still keep it sorta easy to find.
