What do you think about hotel business?

Hotel and tourism business, especially front desk business where you use hotel management apps and agencies and you are in contact with guests all day?

I am into this business for the last 4 years. And this is a bullshit job. Very low payment, no respect, and too many ignorant dumb fucks attack you all day or complain about anything for almost no reason. Even if you become a master receptionist which is the most comfortable job (physically) in any big resort or boutique hotel, or even if you become a front desk manager, it is still a shitty business and job as fuck.

Just stay away from hotel business unless you are the hotel owner or a developer who have created the hotel management software or websites.

Plus you witness too many criminal, police related incidents in the hotels. One of the dirtiest jobs in the world. Saw disgusting cases in hotels I have never saw in my regular life, it was like I am a cop without a team, gun, or a protection.

So why did I choose hotel and tourism business at the beginning and now become almost professional and master at it:

- Because after my online businesses went terrible and pandemy and economic crisis and terrible inflation in the country, I had to start somewhere in life, and discovered hotels business, and did not know any other profession

- Because of inflation in the country, I could not hire a room or rent a house, so they provided a room, food and plus a salary which is always a bit higher than minimum wage, and insurance which is contributed to my retirement days and free/discounted hospital, medication charges

- Thanks to this business, I was in the most famous vacation towns in the country and got a chance to meet too many tourists and people from all over the world and socialize, good beaches, fun night clubs etc. for free

As you see, even though a lot of pros, I still suggest anyone to stay away from hotels... Go learn any valuable skill, a real job or make your own money and then live your own free life.

Yeah, but such businesses aren't for folks who have limited amounts of savings. Wouldn't advise anyone to venture into this type of business unless they have a decent capital to back them up.

The country I live in (India), some of the local street food vendors are millionaires and they only work for say a limited number of hours. But then again, not everyone wants to do that as they think becoming a street food vendor is below them.

one of my close friends is the general manager of an international hotel chain in Bangkok, Thailand and he told me the exact same. The behavior of some people is incredible. You will see all kinda shit. Just yesterday he told me there was a guy who checked in with a 13 year old girl. He said its his daughter, but they have different nationality, different last name, not even the same race. He booked a king bed room, hotel found it suspicious and asked him if he wants to change to a twin bed room. The guy said no. Then they asked him to show proof that its actually his daughter, the guy then panicked and said he wants to cancel his booking.

Yes, I agree with this statement. I heard about a couple from India who left IT jobs to sell samosas and achieved an annual turnover of Rs 45 crores. Totally agree: unless you own the place or build tools for it, hospitality can be incredibly draining for little reward.

You're definitely voicing what a lot of people are thinking.
It’s a tough balance—locals benefit from tourism economically, but it also brings rising rents, overcrowding, and cultural shifts.
Many destinations opened the doors wide, and now they're feeling the heat from over-tourism.
Hard to have it both ways, but yeah, complaining after cashing in does come off a bit hypocritical.
At the end of the day, sustainable tourism needs better planning—not just blaming the tourists.
