Someone says that to check for Google penalties, you can do the following:

For example, if my domain is 'abcsites.com', search for 'abcsites com' in the Google search bar. If the site does not appear when you search with a space instead of a dot, it means the site has received a Google penalty.

Is this method correct?

I mean, you can always check the stats in GSC and if you see sudden drops that's a clear sign of penalty :)

And since you've mentioned site:, if you're using site: and nothing shows up when you know that the domain had ranked before then this is another sign of penalty, quite a big one actually because it means that the site might have been deindexed.

Last but not least, for manual penalties you usually get a notification inside of your GSC under the "manual actions" tab...

You can find out whether you have been penalized by Google even from the indexing speed of the new pages you add to your site.
