eccb06.org was the website for the 5th European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB '06)
The eccb abandoned the eccb06.org domain and is instead using the eccb2006.org
I didn't check what the stats actually are, but the domain has a lot of backlinks to it. Because of the topic, there is probably an abundance coming from lots of .org and .edu sites. Because of this it probably has a fairly high PR.
The bidders are probably looking at what I'm assuming must be a high number of backlinks and a high pr, and bidding on it based on those stats.
It seems to me that the only value of this site is in the PR. If you use build a page on the domain and use it as a link silo to your money site then maybe you can get some link juice from it.
If you wanted to actually build a money site out of it I think you'ld have a project ahead of you. All those backlinks will be keeping it ranked for biology conference keywords. Once they start making additional backlinks and do some onsite seo they could get it to rank well for there targetted keywords as well. But why? The original niche isn't going to be of much use. The name is stupid for anything other than something that can use the same acronym.
Like I said its possible that you could use it as a really good link silo, but I wouldn't pay that kind of price for it myself.
edit- I just looked at the auction and it shows a PR6 with only 1 inbound link. In reality it has a lot more backlinks, because I found more than that by just searching for it in google. But it doesn't matter, the site has a PR6 and I'll bet that's all the bidders are looking at. Whats funny is that if that PR6 is coming from just a single backlink then the buyer better hope that whoever runs the linking site doesn't realize the error and change the backlink from eccb06.org to eccb2006.org or even remove it completely. If they lose that single backlink then that pr isn't going to last very long. LOL

Well in many cases they were built in the past. The website is gone now, but all the backlinking is still in place. If there is enough backlinks and PR then the site might have value, but not nearly as often as the sellers want you to think.
Many times, there never has been a site, but the speculators play on the facts. For example a few years ago speculators bought all the 4 letter dotcoms that were left. Now they try to sell those domains for ridiculous prices. Sadly many people fall for it and pay those kind of prices.
You just need to be smart when choosing a domain. What will the value actually be to you. An aged domain can be valuable especially if it has many backlinks and high pr, but you need to have a plan for the site that will take advantage of those things. Otherwise you're better off just picking some other name and grabbing it for $7-$10. For $1000 you can buy a lot of backlinking for a new site.
Do a search for Viagra, online casino and acai.
Flick through the top 20-30 results and you'll probably notice in the serps a domain like the one for sale. It'll be something like: biologysocietyannual2009.com/casino.htm
The reason its so valuable is that Google has it down for a authority domain and has piled trust rank on it.
A spammer buys/aquires the domain, whacks on a money page about the best online casino, weight loss pill or sexual stimulant with their affiliate link and builds about 50,000 links to the domain fairly quickly. Because the domain has so much trust it doesn't get dropped like a new domain would and the spammer may rank for really quite competitive keywords. Two weeks later someone complains, Google removes the site and the spammer starts again.

@ssellers - That's a very good explanation by cool5now. Dropping a few grand for a domain they can milk over a few weeks to a month isn't a big deal for large scale spammers. They'll be able to make more than enough to make it worthwhile.
For regular guys, thats not the case. The fact that the authority of the site won't last makes a site like that worthless. The name isn't practical for anything other than what it was originally registered for and for the reason cool5now brought up. Definately not worth the thousands being bid on it.
For anyone that starts thinking they want to get in on that type of spam method, you need to learn how to do it right before you start dropping that kind of money on a domain name. It's so easy to screw it up that if you don't know what you're doing you'll get the site dropped out of the serp before you come close to recouping your investment.
