Keyword cannibalization query

Hello there,
While doing keyword research I came across couple of keywords which as per ahref has different difficulty level.


for example, I want to rank for keyword "best android tv". Now it has high difficulty but there is "best android tv with wifi" having low KD.
No if I write 2 articles, one on my main kw "best android tv" and then a supporting article on "best android tv with wifi", will this be considered as Keyword cannibalization as "best android tv" will be common phrase in both the keywords.

If yes, how to address both keywords?

Best way to determine this would be to do a search and see what is ranking on top.

Search for both keyword and take note of the top results.

Are they vastly different when you add Wify?

If not, it is possible that this feature makes a small difference and is not worth a separate page. Rather mention it inside a longer, single page.

You can of course experiment. Create a separate page anyway and see how it performs. If not well just merge it with parent page.

This is a common concern with keywords research. You're correct it might be difficult to rank for "best android tv" than "best android tv with wifi" according to Ahrefs. But you don't have to worry about keyword cannibalization if you write separate articles for targeting each keyword. Make sure each article focuses on their specific intent i.e. one on all android TVs and another one on wifi-enabled ones.

they both look the same to me, I would write one 3000+ words article on "best android tv" and include the other keyword as a H2 sub-heading

Also, I could see plural form changing the ranking drastic on ahref. For example: "best android tv" shows hard KD with volume more than 10k where as "best android tvs" shows medium KD with volume in thousands. (this is just an example. I don't want to reveal my real kw hence putting an analogy to this sample kw.)

if the H2 keyword is low competition it can rank with proper internal linking, topical authority and good domain authority... at least it used to rank, God knows what happens nowadays with google's constant changes...

The point is that if you create 2 pages you might end up with neither page ranking due to cannibalization, that's why I recommend you make 1 page and put all topically relevant keywords in that page

that's what I hate the most. we never know what Google wants! :|

btw what are your thoughts about "plural" usage? at least ahrefs is going crezy with KD & Volumes with just addition of "s"

well, I was just about to say that there's no difference, but a last moment thought made me look up both variants in google and I must admit, I didn't expect to see almost completely different results.

There are a few sites (reddit, TCL, techradar, androidcentral, etc) that show up in top 10 for both variants of the keyword, but with their positions swapped. But there are also a few sites that are different, so google actually serves different results for the plural of a keyword, which is surprising to me because the last time I checked this (few years ago, it's true) there was no difference....

So yeah, I think you should go for the keyword with less competition...

Then don't create 2 pages just one.

Section for wifi will rank for related keywords if optimized well.
