you'll struggle ranking because you lack topical authority.... unless it's a news site, in which case it might work but you'd have to rank in google news I think...

Regarding the monetization, you can monetize it however you want, but you need traffic first, without traffic it doesn't matter if you have ads, affiliate offers, or your own products / services.

If you are selling product of other as an affliate work according to niches that you choose inorder to make google confirm that you're not doing spammy thing, along with that promote right thing or authentic product inorder to take gain long terms. remember content is king. so use content human written and riched with knowledge.
