your probably right just last time I edited my ht acces file or databases the whole thing didnt work --the only way to know if it works is with google tools which requires some verification thing ?? --- plugin is just easier for non developers : )robots.txt doesn't stop bots from indexing you - use the .htaccess entries mentioned above if you're worried about that.
wordpress is already bloated so adding an extra plugin to do something as simple as managing robots.txt seems odd to me. if your blog is low traffic or you have a dedicated server then it's no biggie i guess though.
personally i just wack empty index.html files in each subdir to stop indexing as well as the .htaccess rule (if enabled by default) - i.e: no need to trigger php at all.
