Privacy with a new domain

I register my domains with godaddy and they always want to charge 5 or 8 bucks for privacy. i think its a rip off since i have registered 50 to 75 domains with them. i even called and threatened to pull my domains if they didnt work something out....no go.

i was wondering if i just make a generic email and go and get a prepaid visa and just fake the info instead?
what would be the pros and cons.
(im sure this is against the rules at icann or something, but other than that?)

Stop using godaddy or namecheap and switch to resell.biz. They are specifically designed for people with hundreds of domains, and the prices are a lot better (I pay $7.25 per .com including free whois privacy). It's worth making the shift - you save money and stop having to deal with the assholes at godaddy. If you don't like resell.biz, do your own research over at webhostingtalk and see what other providers people like - enom is a big one but their buyin costs suck.

the reason i use godaddy is because i was getting domains for <7.00 and never needed the privacy thing. but no i know better.
ps if you ever want a single cheap domain and you use godaddy, just goog "domains" and godaddy appears at the top with a big discount. even for returning customers. just an fyi

Its against the ICANN rules, and if they cannot contact you for whatever reason and there is a question about transfering your domain to another provider by a thief, you can risk loosing your domain. Also if they find that the information is fake, they will require you to update it with accurate information!

If you are concerned about privacy, just get a google voice number or free voicemail box. And gmail or any anonymous email account.

A PO box # for $50 a year to receive junk mail, and you should never have to worry about any feedback from Godaddy or ICANN about false or misleading information.

The "real" price of domains went up across the board a while ago when ICANN raised the fees to registrars. Besides one-time specials, you can't reliably get domains for < $7 anymore. At any real volume, the money saved on getting a single free domain (or jumping through hoops to get more than one) is far outshadowed by the hassle of dealing with an overpriced long-term registrar, or transferring away from the same. Even if the first year is free, you quickly lose that money by paying too much on renewals.

If you have a portfolio of nearly 100 domains, you're losing real money by paying $3 too much per year per domain. Do you really save $300 a year in discounted first year reg fees?
