Yesterday one of my clients researched a domain name for a site
that I'm building for her. So as part of the service we pay for the
domain name registration. So she told me that the domain was
available and I did a quick check and confirmed that it was avail.

So today I went to register the domain and would you believe that
it was gone. So I checked the whois just to make sure that I had
correctly looked at the domain name the day before and sure
enough the reg date was for 5/17/2010 and guess where the
address was for the new owner? Thats right Arizona.
The Godaddy Headquarters.

So beware when doing any kind of research there. If you don't
buy it immediately those snakes will steal your shit.

And I didn't even have it my cart or anything.

So some spying is def going on there.

I wonder if they're breaking any laws - prob not since its their site.

This isn't the first time that this happened to me, but before I thought
it was just a coincidence. Now I now its some BS.

If I'm researching domains and find ones that I'm interested in, I register them right then, on the spot.

So many registrars and whois sites are into sniping available domains these days.

The same thing happened to me months ago, searched godaddy for domain name it was available went back to register the domain but it was gone. This all happen the same day.

this has happened a few times to me and I dont go near go daddy... I believe some sites get registered and the whois info does not get updated.
I have seen it says its avail but when they do the actual check its regged multiple times...

I think GoDaddy actually has some kind of 'Investor's Service' that actually allows people that pay the monthly fee to see what domain names are being checked for availability at the GoDaddy site.

I received an email promoting this service a while back.

I mean, if I were them I'd be doing the same thing... compare researched domains with search volume, if it's high enough - give the user a chance to grab it, but claim it after X time if it's still not registered.

I mean, it's pretty cheap, but nothing wrong with that... in fact I think we can consider ourselves lucky that we do have the chance to get it right then and there!

This is called front-running, and it's been happening for a while. GoDaddy is guilty of it, and netsol has been guilty in the past. It was a bigger problem when registrars were allowed to cancel out of a purchase within 7 days - they would buy domains that people seemed interested in, and then try to upsell them to the customer. If they couldn't sell, they would return them at no financial loss. It's not ethical, and I think it's now against ICANN's rules, but it still happens because it is tremendously profitable.

It's not terribly likely, but check again in a week and see if the domain is now available. In the future, tell your clients not to search using godaddy.

I remember that happened to me too. One day I was searching for a domain and then got almost to the purchase screen but opted not to get it. A little while later I changed my mind and it was not available. Then I checked a couple days later and it was available.

I wonder if GD puts some kind of temporary hold on the name depending on how far you go with your shopping cart?

Network Solutions was automatically registering domains that were queried via their WHOIS servers for a while.

That said, I use the command-line whois tool (e.g., "whois whatever.com") that comes with Macs and most other Unix-like operating systems and have never had this happen to me.

I've had the same thing happen to me. While I was at my job I had not much to do and I was looking for some domains for some new projects. I wrote a couple of available ones down. When I tried to register them the next day when I was at home, they were registered...
But yeah I guess it's kind of normal... but since then I'm staying away from GD.

I wanna know more about how Dotcomer said he bout the domain dvds.com & paid for it and didnt get his domain. No refund either?

That has to be illegal.

I have also heard stories of people who paid & then just received a refund later and they never received the domain. I would think also illegal.

Doing what they did to OP is f-up & shady but proly not illegal.

I haven't noticed this with namecheap and I often decide to not buy come back later and then buy with them. I however have noticed that with the bulk domain check tool I use it sometimes happens. That said I go through several thousand domains checked a day with it and its quite possible that they were just taken by somebody else a day later because often they are rly good domain names.
