ccTLD can limit the audience to a particular country, a .com domain can also target a global audience.

The idea of global search result isn't very accurate since some domains could rank high for a keyword in a specific country then in another country it'll be ranking less or differently. I've had this experience with my site.

So, it'll be recommended that you make your site open to virtually all countries. Then you'd have a better advantage. Even though your domain extension shouldn't really have effect on how you rank(according to Google), you don't want to use a .ca domain to compete with .com and .uk domains in the UK for the same keyword. You may win the search in Canada but outside maybe more challenging.
