SEARCH ENGINE LAND reports that Google's search engine has started dividing search results into pages again. Google switched to continuous scrolling at the end of 2022 – that is, search results continue to load when the user has reached the end.
According to a spokesperson, the reason Google returned to pagination is that search results can then be delivered faster because no results that the user has not explicitly requested are loaded. Google also says that the automatic loading did not make users more satisfied with the service in a significant way.
The homepages that end up on the second page could potentially get fewer clicks, as users now first have to click on a link in the page layout instead of just continuing to scroll. The change should have started to be implemented yesterday, but we still have continuous scrolling on the web at the time of writing.
