I dont know what to do next in SEO

I have a small ecommers client and I made a keyword research
Changed titles of categories and wrote text with H1, H2, internal linking etc

It ranked but not really great
Some are possition 20
Some 30 etc

But I dont really know what to do next

I was thinking to start writing blog posts and link products and categories in them to boost internal linking and topical authority

But will it really help it ?

Or is it just better to pay for link building now ?

Competetors that rank on first page mostly doesnt even have a backlinks linked to their category page I wanna rank on too

So how have they accomplished it ?

Maybe that internal linking etc ?

You are in business for couple of months while your competitors are for years

Maybe your competitors got more root domain backlinks than you

Its not always necessary to target specific categories all the time.

Root domain passes link juice as well.

Moreover what about your category optimization? It also has huge impact.

Last but not least, backlinks work.

Write good blog posts with links to your products, and yes ,do some link building too.

Well since you already pointed it's an ecommerce website, so SEO won't help much.
Your client must consider running ads.
Thing is you will need to have deep pockets to spend on SEO and Backlinks to compete in Ecommerce market with some big established websites.
It will take a mammoth SEO effort to build the same topical trust like established ecommerce websites in the eyes of search algorithm.
Also, the current state of SEO in general is very uncertain so it will be a gamble if you keep pushing for SEO.

Focusing on Branding & spending on ads is the best way forward.
Influencer marketing, sponsored posts on social media and other ugc platforms will surely help.

Good approach you can work on topic cluster, you should work on informative content as much as possible, and the content that you use should be unique though. Google loves such stuff where people can find useful information within a topic, and relevant resources for keywords that are part of that topic. So it doesn't have to be related to the keywords, similar semantic search terms also can be used. For the research, you can check what are the most common questions within your industries and then building content-based search terms related to those topics would be great.

If your clients site uses wordpress, Internal link juicer plugin was a really great way to help with internal linking.

As far as black hat goes, post your client in popular reddit channels with similar products and create realistic sock puppet accounts to upvote them. Google loves reddit right now. Just make sure it looks natural. I remember seeing a backlink from reddit come through semrush when I was doing shit like this, but It doesn't seem to be there now though, I'm not sure what their policy on backlinks and linking is, I haven't looked into it.

In my experience in link-building, it is always better to start with homepage and also the "shop". Then you can get links for categories, too.
