What i do is, I picked up the low authority site with good traffic in my niche. Put it on ahrefs, check its top pages and get the keywords from there.

And for competition, I go the google, search the keyword, and check how many low authority sites are ranking there or any forums are ranking there.

Just use the Moz extension on Chrome and try searching for your keywords, see through the SERPs which site have low DA then put it on the ahrefs or semrush to see if its getting any traffic or not.

Answer the public, Quora and Reddit are good sources to land long-tails. If you are inexperienced you can try your hands on "SEMRUSH" keyword tool, "show all keyword options".

That said, I do the keyword research manually by skimming over pages for each related main keywords on my list.

These are gold mine platforms for keyword research!

The best thing about them is, that you don´t need a paid/fancy SEO tool to find untapped keywords/topics opportunities. Just use the advanced search operator site:reddit.com "[your keyword]" and you´re done!

Can you ask some questions around what problems customers are having? Customers already know the solution and are confused between suppliers. List out some answers, you can build long-tail keywords based on them

I think this approach is great for popular keywords when customers know exactly what they're looking for. But it doesn't really work when customers have a need but don't know the solution, or when a business is trying to educate a new solution that people aren't familiar with.

In those cases, I usually make a customer journey map to figure out where customers are in their buying journey, what key activities they're doing, and what their search needs are. This helps me come up with the right search terms.

Then, I check with Google Suggestions to see if people are actually searching for those keywords.

Absolutely there's more to keywords than to just matching keywords on Ahrefs. Here some of the free ways I search long term keywords:
1. Google Search Features (Google Autocomplete, People Also Ask Section, and related searches)
2. Answer the public (asnwerthepublic.com)
3. Reddit or Quora Forums
4. Google trends
