It would be to your benefit to know the inner workings of G in order to exploit it. Now, if that means knowing whether or not inbound links can harm your SERPs, shouldn't you not want to know that?

Instead of bashing the OP, maybe someone with an answer to his question should step up. I would also like to know.

I was wondering if this would work. There are ways to ping a blog without owning the actual blog. If you were in direct competition with the owner of that blog, could you spam backlinks, list in link farms, set up a continuous ping (once every 1 minute) on their blog, and all the other bad SEO promotion methods to their website to kill the google ranking? I wouldn't know why that wouldn't work, just seeing if anyone knows of any drawbacks from that besides time.

There is a discussion going on at Wickedfire right now... A well respected moderator there says that it is possible.

Like I said, I'm not trying to pick a fight here...

The way that I see it is if you can really kill someone else's rankings, then that's a major flaw in G. If so, we should know about it.

Also, what's to stop your competitors from doing it to you? Do you think that most people in competitive niches would think twice if they knew that they could knock off their top 5 competitors and then jump to the number 1 spot themselves in the process?

I'm not saying that I would do this myself, but I at least want to know if it's possible.

I think it is possible, and its easy to figure out how. You don't need to ask this and no sensible person is going to answer this for you in any detail, as it will not lead to anything good.

yeah, that is exactly what my point was....if you think you're gonna grow by cutting everybody ahead of you down, you're thinking like a loser......you'll constantly be fighting pple around you instead of growing yourself

besides, G isn't the only search engine in town, and your competition knows that

You should focus your energy on copying your competitor's success formula. And then in making this formula even better. This way you'll earn more $$$, as I'm sure this is the primary reason why you're into im.
