I've been looking at using Instagram comments for marketing but can't for the life of me figure out how the Instagram algorithm ranks comments. At times the comment with the most engagement is the top comment but other times there will be a low engagement comment above a high engagement comment. It seems like the timing of the comments also affects the rankings as well. Does anyone have experience with this or have any tips on how to get comments to rank first or second on high-traffic posts?

Well its hard to say what makes the comment top, but it seems like there could be multiple factors :

1.How relevant the comment is with the post.
2.If its informative or something creative.
3.How many people liked it, in what time frame.
4.How many replies that comment has.

Even if you do testings and find out what works, its a matter of time IG changes Algo and the deciding factor also changes.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing in regards to time frame and comments but I don't understand how the algorithm can tell wether or not a comment is relevant to a post.

I'm also a bit confused because I've seen comment rankings that negate the theory that the more engagement a comment has the higher it ranks. The only other thing that comes to mind is timing of comment and the engagement it has.

Instagram has a page on their website that explains how they rank posts and reels but nothing about comments.

this is. i often see less liked comment overpowering. if it is very much relevant to the post it will rank
I'm just a bit confused as to how they do this, the only way that comes to mind is by using llms but I don't think that would make sense from a financial standpoint. They can also use keywords but that doesn't seem like it would be accurate.

meta's algorithm. they only know what they are doing

by having a higher number of accounts who engage with your account. that will make you rank anyware.. even on likes of the posts or reels

Hadn't thought about it that way, makes a lot of sense.
