Content is king, but trends are hot! For long-term SEO, what matters more: creating awesome content or keeping up with the latest SEO fads? What's your opinion on this?

I think one doesn't exclude the other. For example, keeping up with the fads still involve making "awesome" content, otherwise who's going to consume it if it's bad? :)
Interesting.

For long term, I'll recommend creating evergreen content but that is largely dependent on your niche.

Also, trends aren't necessarily a short term thing. There would always be new trends within every industry. You could be creating trendy content for a really long time and would have any issue.

BTW, trendy topics ≠ low quality content

Quality content. Trends may give short bursts, but quality content builds authority and keeps users coming back.

I do agree on these points Trends are short burst having quality content will help you in long term and maybe you can edit your content with the Trend change.

I agree with your point it's actually nice.

In the long-term SEO success, creating evergreen is generally more valuable it builds a foundation of authority.

But it's impossible not to follow the latest trends in SEO, remember the April Google update.

Both are important. You need to keep your contents updated on current trends.

Yeah True, without solid content strategies with SEO specialized techniques no one is unable to ranks high in SEO world.

Both creating Quality content and keeping up with SEO trends are important for long-term SEO success

If I had to pick one or the other I would say quality content, especially evergreen content.

However, I do think there is a benefit in leveraging both simultaneously. Following some trends, especially those you think may last for a bit, is a great way to give your domain a short jump that you can hopefully leverage or convert.
