Some say a physical ledger is safer, but you have to take account external circumstances into account. Like they still can be broken/stolen or lost. My best advice is to make a top 10 list and store your currency on multiple wallets depending on the amount.

Been using ledger for 2 years now. Regarding safety, personally I never had an issue with it but there was a lot of buzz about an update adding a backdoor about a year ago

I probably should have explained myself a bit better on my initial post.

Ledger's have and use proprietary software.
They have already suffered multiple data leaks.

If they want, they could place a backdoor into the OS and steal all Ledger users' crypto.
Even if they themselves wouldn't do such things, if their security is that bad that they suffer data leaks every year they are in business, who says that it wouldn't be possible for a malicious actor to gain access to their OS distribution system to distribute backdoored OSes?

They also just do a lot of very shady things that I'm too bored of going over.

Trezor also has its own flaws, but at least it is 100% open source.

Ledger hasn’t really been in a good spotlight the last few years, database leaks, the recovery update they pushed through.

i’d say go with Trezor, which has a huge advantage because it’s open-sourced as well.
