I've been working on a website for about 4 to 5 months now, having taken over the project in January 2024. Upon reviewing the content, I noticed that there were some blogs posted before I joined the project, which I suspect might have been AI-written. This suspicion arose because of a decline in performance after the March core update. I'm considering deleting all the blogs posted before January or preventing Google crawlers from following them. Do you think this strategy could positively impact the website's ranking?

All the 3 options you have stated would work either way. I would suggest you to tag them with no index As deleting the blog posts would be time consuming.

From my point of view, this is the #1 most complex question nowadays that 99.99% of SEO pros are doing. What you read here is going to be, what people is thinking on doing on this scenario, because we must face that pretty much everyone have been using AI and is facing the exact same issue.

I could tell you what I'm doing but I have to admit that I'm doing this pretty much out of randomness of ideas, 0% confidence it will be a thing or not.

So the only advice I can tell is: just do something, test it for a while and comment back on your conclusions.

If you want to call yourself a SEO, just don't be always a leecher.

similar problem bumped into few days ago from one of our close friend. He also used Ai but the previous gen (GPT 2) to be exact now most of the articles getting de-indexed with march update and have burning question ! should i delete the old articles ?

We discuss the problem with the team and examine the site our conclusion was not doing anything but focusing the upcoming content.

Reasons :

Deleting posts could effect the general Authority and internal linking structure the ones who had rankings ( so it`s impossible to determine how Google will react )

Second reason we passed this intervention it`s already crawled and not ranked or de-ranked so deleting them will not bring any metrics additional but will definetely bring negative effect on it. So it`s not worth the effort.

So the article ratio on the subject site around %90 ai %10 hand-written


What we recommend on this stage something more in between - Solution :

Revisiting the old articles and manually write some content and do some off-page SEO & do some internal and external linking with ranked sites in other words forcing Google re-index the articles to get ranked

Another addition use indexers after to do this work, I`m not sure how many articles do you have but this is the intervention he is doing now.


So I did recommended fourth option

Yes , I am focusing on Upcoming content. I post content with ( 0 to 10 %) AI. Sometime i could not able to make it 0% AI written.

Just because it is AI it doesnt mean that's the problem. Google penalises websites not because of that.

1. Review & Revise: Focus on improving existing content by identifying and addressing areas for enhancement such as thin content, factual inaccuracies, or poor readability.
2. Nofollow Tag: Add a "nofollow" tag to prevent search engines from following links within pre-January blogs without penalizing the content.
3. Noindex Tag (Use with Caution): Use a "noindex" tag sparingly to prevent search engines from indexing specific pages, but be mindful of potentially hindering ranking potential.
