There are some repeat questions in this thread, so I'm going to create an FAQ section at the bottom of the opening post.
The current background colour is #f3f3ef. I think the old background was straight up #FFF

It feels like playing GTA 5 compared to GTA 4.
Or more like GTA 4 compared to GTA SA.
I just opened on the desktop for the first time.
GTA 5 was more colorful and not really like GTA.
It feels like a different forum. Hard to compare to old version.

The overall feeling of rounding is better than full square design. Times square? No, just old schooling too hard. When the internet had started everything was just squares and rectangles. I think the contrast of font to borders is well done. It's actually bright and the background isn't all black though it's well mixed in all these shades. It's actually kinda bronze but not too shit-like (joke).
Black isn't overwhelming and isn't everywhere like it used to be.
It feels like good design i recall from "game related forums". People running those forums paid premium prices for that type of design.
I believe some people complain too much as they're full time complainers probably.

Just found another issue, missing the thread pages counter at the top. There is one at the bottom, but the one at the top was useful for me. Android phone, just in case.

That's fine, that makes sense.
I checked on my phone right now and I can see that there's a page counter at the top isn't there now, but there's a page counter at the top and bottom on the desktop site. Whilst I can't say this for certain, that may have been a deliberate design change on the mobile site that meant the top page counter was removed to simplify the mobile theme.
The design team who worked on the theme reads these posts, so perhaps you'll get a better response in due time.
