Proxy Question for the experts...

As a proxy noob, could someone explain why some have user/pass and some don't?

I'm running various software and some won't work with user/pass, then I have to buy some more from another provider that DOESN'T have user/pass, but it does require me to detect MY IP.

Can anyone explain?

I think there might be private ones that don't require a password, as well.

YourPrivateProxy proxies don't require usernames/passwords and I'm pretty sure they're not publicly available.

I have no idea how it works, to be honest.

This depends on the configuration of the proxies; for Squid there are a few ways to allow access - one is by whitelisting the IPs, another is by authenticating with username and password. This is done by editing the configuration file on the server; you can also restrict access for different users by time, sites allowed / not allowed, protocols allowed and so on....

yeah...if they dont have authorization on there proxy list..like username/pass etc...it goes public..anyone can leech the proxy from some leecher..

say like ..I bought some private proxy and they doesnt require user/pass...den i can share wid a world..
so its like anyone having those list of proxies can use it ..when u buy private proxies as them about proxy security..abt the ips..if they are static one ..blah blah...the private proxies will have static ips (ips assigned to there server)..

So, I have proxies from 2 different companies;

Packetflip - which has a username & password

YourPrivateProxy - which has no user/pass, but it autodetects my IP


Are these similar as far as being private? Why does one have to check my IP?

what yourprivateproxy wants you to check and submit your ip is to allow the proxies which you are allocated to can only be used by that particular ip of the computer only. Therefore, others would not be able to gain access to it.

However if with user and password authentication, it means that the proxies are not limited to that particular ip but instead it is accessed by whoever who possess the username and password.

So they're basically 2 forms of authentication? Sounds like yourprivateproxy would be more secure since it can only be used on my computer.

BUT, I noticed that some things using a proxy actually NEED a user/pass (When I manually set proxies for Internet Explorer). I found this out when I tried to use yourprivateproxy in IE.

user/pass or ip are used to connect your machine to the server ...I am not sure wat script they use for connection...i guess yourprivateproxy using htaccess method or kind of...I personally use user/pass authorization method on mah server...when u input your user/pass ..the database gives u access to the server and u can use all the given socks...(hope this give u idea)

i don't know much abt yourprivateproxy but they sound nice to me..
