In Wordpress we have datePublished and dateModified, modifying datePublished even if it changes the content a lot, could it seem like manipulation since dateModified is used for that?

Don't worry about those jargons, just try to keep your content updated and change the publish date to most recent. I realize Google have been removing articles that have not recently been updated.

Manipulation happens only when you basically update the post without any changes. I might be wrong but I think google ignores it.
On the other hand when you actually modify your post/page then yeah, google will use modified date and it's fair.

It makes sense and simplifies using only the modified date to use as a reference. Many thanks for the reply.

Yes, I monitor my keywords and I'm seeing drops in content for 2023 and I'm rushing to update articles and trying to work with a silo that simplifies ever green content updates. Thanks a lot for the help

I heard of cases where Google put a manual penalty on sites that just updated the publish date without any content changes. There are even WP plugins for updating the publish date regularly, but I would be a bit careful doing that.

Yes, I've heard of that too and I believe it's a practice that isn't even worth trying
