If a website loses its organic traffic and a big chunk of its competitors are also losing their organic traffic share, then it's a signal that Google is prioritizing another type of website in the SERPs.

The type of websites, along with their identities and contexts, is important for a search engine to determine in order to identify the quality thresholds for every query network.

For example, if you have an affiliate website and Google starts demoting your site in SERPs, then it's always a great idea to correlate the demotion of your website with its competing affiliate websites in SERPs.

Let's say previously Google ranked affiliate-type websites in SERPs for a query network, but now it has started to prioritize other types of websites, which could be e-commerce websites, UGC websites (e.g., Reddit or Quora), etc.

Such analysis would add an additional layer of data-backed context to your strategy for protecting or restoring your website traffic.

PS: In my next thread, I'll discuss some practical steps you can take to minimize the loss of website traffic, and how you can restore and achieve a positive ranking for your website.

The idea is to keep an eye on SEO trends and how Google ranks sites, but it's tough to know exactly when Google changes its rules. It can be costly and time-consuming to always adjust your strategy based on what competitors do. It's best to also focus on improving your site's overall SEO, not just its Google ranking.

When Google starts favoring different types of sites in search results, it's important to look at what your competitors are doing. Understanding these changes can help you adapt your strategy to keep your website traffic strong.

Сrucial to assess broader industry trends and competitor performance. Analyzing competitor landscape and aligning your strategy.

True keeping up with the SEO trends is a huge headache and google keeps on adding to it. Keep an eye on your competitors always

What if the Competitors never do anything special yet they get traffic? How to say about that ? whereas you keep tweaking around.

This is exactly the situation I have encountered.

Winning and losing is a part of life and similarly with SEO.
We have been noticing regular updates since 2012, like how and why it came up with Panda and then penguin to combat thin contents and spam links, and then core updates, Helpful content updates to combat AI etc and similarly opening doors for PBNs and going hard on them, Allowing news and parasites to rank and then going hard on them again.
SEO keeps evolving from time to time and never settles as Google updates its algorithm regularly to improve user experience and search quality. But content is always the king and I like it.
So trend is our friend here. We should always keep an eye on it to find out what Google is priortizing in its updates and start working on them right away to utilize the most.

You won't gain traffic without doing nothing even if it's not fancy and special. You always get few points here and there when you analyze your competitor's site. there are many factors for it to look like on page optimization, how did the internal linking is, how often the contents are published, quality of it, in which intend the content is based on etc.....,

Yeah, sometimes G changes user intent.
For example, today it will rank bookstores and maybe tomorrow they will rank book review sites... so it's time consuming to adapt.

Well true but end of the day still have to Depend how Google play around. I mean you can't keep always do changes just because every time Google do new updates right? Who know they revert back etc?

You really have to roll up your sleeves and get to the root of why you're losing your traffic.

You have a lot more control over the situation than you give yourself credit for.

Take care of your visitors.

It's crucial to conduct a site audit, review content quality, check for algorithm updates, assess the backlink profile, analyze competitors, improve on-page SEO, focus on user experience, invest in content marketing, and continuously monitor and adjust strategies.

To maintain your ranking you must do something extra than your competitors. By extra it doesn't mean it can be anything, extra but relevant to your niche. This will also be a plus point if your opponent is not doing anything.

:) Last time people tell me Luck don't exist in IM , also including ranking your site. Later i find out is so wrong. I see crappy slow site also can rank above a highly design , good content site. A lot will say that crappy site must be doing lots of " blackhat seo " over ride that good site but I check that good site have lots of real good authority backlinks. etc. How that possible? Isn't this is " Luck " involve?

The best thing you can do is offer a quality service, better than your competitors. Regarding Google updates, it's not like we can do anything, we just have to put up with those headaches

Monitoring competitors is crucial. By analyzing their actions, you can adjust your strategy to maintain robust website traffic. Understanding industry shifts enables adaptation, ensuring competitiveness and sustained online visibility.
